The Battle of Gettysburg was one of the most gruesome battle in all the civil war. Abraham Lincoln wrote the speech "Gettysburg Address" dedicating the battle field for a final resting place for the men that gave their life in battle. who here gave their lives that nation might live" (lincoln). That sentence says that they where dedicating the battle field for the men who died there and so the nation will live on. it also says later, "that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth"(Lincoln). That's saying that because of the war the nation is having a new birth of freedom. He is also saying that the Government of the United States of America will not perish, from the earth. Abraham Lincoln has very creative writing styles, and short speeches. Now that we have discussed The Gettysburg Address, lets move on to Akers Writings.
The civil war was a horrible time in history, The south versus the north, it was truly a Civil War.
After the war people built monuments and statues to honor the men who died in the war. Akers writes a very detailed Article explaining one of the monuments meaning and history. in the article ""A Monument for Peace" it explains, "Moretti's statute showed a young man standing between two horses. Behind it, a tall white obelisk was built, with an angel at the top. "No guns, no swords, no trappings of war mar the peace-like beauty," Mrs. Caldwell said. It was not a war monument, but a peace monument." this is explaining what the statue looked like and what it stood for. it wasnt a war statue but one for peace. the statue was then blocked so they had to relocated it so people could view it easier and everywhere. it costed a lot of money, and effort but finally it was done. in "A Monument for Peace" it says "The original statue cost $30,000 in 1927. To move and restore it would cost much more-some estimate more than $500,000. But after seven years of work, the money was collected, and the statue was rededicated-with a brand new obelisk to go with it" this part is explaining what it took to rebuild and move the statue. this statue was important and stood for peace, and changed the life of
many.
Abraham Lincoln and Akers both wrote outstanding papers to memorialize the soldiers from the Civil War. Both did a great job, and there writings where different, but similar in many ways. Akers wrote about a statue that changed the lives of many, Lincoln had a dedicatory speech on the battle ground of Gettysburg dedicating it to the men who died there. Akers and Lincolns writing strategies where different in many ways, but in some ways, they where the same. they both Honored the People who died in the civil war, and they both shared some history in their writings. Many people can honor War Heros in many, many ways.
