Abraham Lincoln was asked to speak during the dedication ceremony of the Gettysburg National Cemetery in Pennsylvania, on November 19, 1863. This was the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. Edward Everett was the featured speaker at the event and spoke for two hours. Abraham Lincoln was there to give closing comments. His speech was only 272 words long and he only spoke for about two minutes. Even though his speech was so short, the Gettysburg Address became one of the most famous speeches in history. The Battle of Gettysburg was a very deadly battle for the Union and Confederate armies. The battle lasted for three days, from July 1 to July 3, 1863. They are the Bliss, Bancroft, Hay, Nicolay, and Everett copies. Each copy is a little different because Lincoln revised the speech each time he wrote it. The Bliss copy was written for Colonel Alexander Bliss. The Bliss copy is the only one that has Lincoln’s signature and date. This is the copy that is framed and stored in the Lincoln room of the White House. The Bliss version is also engraved in the wall of the Lincoln Monument. The Bancroft copy was written for historian George Bancroft. This copy can be found at Cornell University. The Bliss and Bancroft copies were written to be used to recopy for fundraisers for the soldiers. The Hay copy was written for White House assistant John Hay. This copy can be found at the Library of Congress. The Nicolay copy was written for Lincoln’s personal secretary, John G. Nicolay. This copy can also be found at the Library of Congress.
