Ghost Stories
Firstly, how are the figurative language used in the poem?
The different figurative languages used are:
Simile:
Example 1:"eyes as wide as a football-pool"
Meaning: Timothy's eyes are very big.
Why use this:exaggeration

Example 2:"Ears like bombs and teeth like splinters"
Explanation: Timothy's ears are very big and his teeth are very sharp
Why use this:exaggeration again

Metaphor:
Example 1:"And his hair is an exclamation-mark"
Explanation:Timothy's hair is very messy
Why use this:To connect with previous stanza ending with "dark" and also exaggeration

Symbolism:
Example 1:"shoots down arithmetic-bird"
Explanation: Timothy does not understand maths class at all
Why use this: Shoots down symbolises the "did not understand" part and the word arithmetic means math so "shoots down an arithmetic bird" means to not understand maths

Why do I like this poem?
I like this poem because it is a poem with a deeper meaning other than just a humorous poem making fun of Timothy Winters. It is actually a poem that sympathies Timothy Winters. From the third stanza, we already know that Timothy does badly in school but receives no help from the welfare state. He has bloody feet and that shows that he had no shoes to wear and that he lives in Suez street whic sounds like "sewers street" a seemingly unhygenic and dity place to live in. His father is a drunkard and his mother leaves the family and even his grandmother drinks gin and gets drunk.Timothy is thus drugged with aspirin and goes to sleep. The laws prevent him from being able to get away from his misery and the last stanza which is like a prayer, shows that only God can help Timothy out of his situation. Such a seemingly hilarious poem actually is smpathising a poor boy. This is the part of the poem that makes me like it most.

sad to be pitied repulsive rejected unfortunate tough neglected dirty content unhappy caring lovable poor fragile energetic powerful hungry gentle ugly abused

The audience expects to get goosebumps, and to be on the edge of their seats while chewing their nails. The scariest haunted house of the state is located in Tuxedo Park, New York, called The Forest of Fear. This event is more extreme than ever this year, containing five attractions for one admission price between $20 and $30. The five attractions are Uncle Jimmie’s Place, Das Kamp, Blind Panic, The Graveyard, and the Slaughterhouse. In Poe’s most famous poem, The Raven, the most obvious form of symbolism is the raven, symbolizing death. The raven is known as “The Devil’s Bird” because of it’s ugly and dark appearance, which helps it symbolize death. In the poem, the bird is often perched high and mocks the man in the poem by saying “nevermore” as if he were a broken record. The…

The main thing is, why don’t they just leave? The answer in the best haunted house literature is, they don’t leave because they cannot. Something keeps them inside. When someone takes on a house they form a bond between self and architecture. Houses are where people have to go when they are trying to hide. This makes it all the more terrifying when the houses turn on us. Our houses are everywhere.…

The play starts out with Oswald Alving returning home to visit his mother one of the few times he has visited since leaving home as a young boy. He was sent away to prevent him from becoming morally tainted by his father, Captain Alving, who later died of syphilis. Manders, the mother's former lover, also visits and tells off Mrs. Alving for not living a more conventional life and having an education. In the play, Oswald reveals that he is also suffering from syphilis and will inevitably develop dementia. It is implied that he has gotten syphilis from his father's promiscuous life, and that he is paying for his fathers sins. To make up for the past and to prove her love, Oswald asks his mother to give him a fatal dose of morphine when signs of dementia appear. At the end of the play it is not clear what she will do.…

It is in the soliloquies of Hamlet and of the Ghost that the themes of infiltration, knowledge and piety are questioned. The Ghost's soliloquy is filled with biblical imagery which perhaps suggests that the Ghost is not only now in the hands of the spiritual world but also attempting to rekindle any faith which he had lost through the betrayal of his brother. This event, what was essentially assassination, remains pertinent in the Ghosts mind, and it is through spiritual and biblical references which the ghost describes it, as just as the audience are, the Ghost is still searching for reason and salvation. This reason and salvation that the ghost attempts to find is articulated through revenge. The linking of the two ideas, revenge and salvation,…

When it comes to paranormal activities or supernatural experiences, I am caught in the middle on where I believe it or not. I don’t necessarily believe in ghost but do believe in spirits. In 2004, my great grandmother died. For a whole year after her death, if I went over to her house, I would leave before it got dark because for some reason I was afraid to spend the night in her house after her death. I finally got the courage to spend the night over her house and I must admit, it was the most peaceful sleep I had ever gotten my entire life. While at her house, I could misplace something and spend a whole hour looking for it. Once I decide to give up looking for it I would say “Madear, give me back my ____” and instantly whatever I would be looking for would appear. I…
