Tiziano Vecellio was born at Pieve di Cadore in the Alps north of Venice around 1490 A.D. He became known in english as Titian. At the age of ten Titian’s father sent him and his brother Francesco to Venice where they were to study painting at Sebastiano Zuccato’s workshop. After a short time at Sebastiano Zuccato’s workshop Titian decided to leave, while his brother stayed at the workshop to study painting. After leaving the workshop Titian went on to become an apprentice of Gentile and Giovanni Bellini to further his study of painting. While in his apprenticeship with Gentile and Giovanni he met Giorgione who had trained with Giovanni and was able to help Titian get his first certain work, where he painted the frescoes on the exterior of German Merchants Exchange from 1507-1508. Titian’s first major independent commission came in 1510 with Giorgione when he was asked to paint three frescos in Scuola del Santo of the Confraternity of Saint Anthony in Padua. The first of these painting are believed to be started by Giorgione who died not too long after the start of the paintings in 1510. However it is unsure as to if Giorgione actually started the painting due to the style of the two painters are so similar. Since Giorgione and Titian were both trained by Giovanni they both made use of the beauty of color and detached reflective mood later characterized as giorgionesque, hence why it is hard to tell the difference between Giorgione’s work and Titian’s early work. In 1516 Titian was commissioned to start the work on his most famous early masterpiece which was an altarpiece called Assumption of the Virgin at the Church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice. This painting depicted the Virgin soaring with her arms outstretched to heaven.…

Sandro Botticelli has created this Tempura on canvas painting , it measures 172.5 x 278.5cm and is located in the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence .The Birth of Venus belongs to the renaissance period and is not a representation of a Christian legend but an interpretation of a classical Myth. This painting is one of a series which Botticelli was inspired to paint after the written descriptions by the 2nd century historian Lucian. It depicts the classical goddess Venus emerging from the water on a shell , she is being blown towards shore by the Zephyrs (symbols of spiritual passions) there is also an Ore waiting on shore to distribute her with a purple flowered cloak. Its function is to communicate of point of view , as to how the Greek goddess ,Venus, was created. Botticelli has used line and tone to create the effect of a 3-dimensional shell ,the shell appears to be gliding along the top of the water The Birth of Venus is a linear one, yet Venus is depicted with very soft lines, separating her from the rest of the figures. He has also used a repetitious form of brush-work to create the textured effect of choppy water. The central figure of Venus is slightly moved to the right of the centre line ,while the figures have magnificently drawn outlines and almost appear to be cut-outs placed on an ideal background .At a glance ,Venus is so beautiful that we fail to notice her imperfections; the unnatural length of her neck ,the steep fall of her shoulders and the unusual way her left arm is attached to her body remain unobtrusive. There seems to be a build up of water around the base of the shell suggesting movement and her location in relation to the shoreline. The focal point of the artwork is definitely the central figure of Venus; she appears to be emphasised more-so than the other figures. She appears to have a whiter skin tone and she also looks slightly larger than the three other characters. The naked goddess may not be a symbol for earthly love but perhaps a…

SYDNEY STUDIES The Tempest and the Discourse of Colonialism G. A. WILKES If the study of Shakespeare itself can be viewed as an act of cultural imperialism, a play like The Tempest can readily be seen as a text which is complicit with colonial power. Prospero is the usurping invader, nervous about the legitimacy of his rule, and Caliban is the representative of the subjugated race, his language lessons seen as an attempt to eradicate his own culture, or to bring it under imperialist control. The best way of entry into this debate is still Stephen Greenblatt 's essay of 1976, 'Learning to Curse: Aspects of Linguistic Colonialism in the Sixteenth Century ', though its implications may not yet have been fully grasped.…

“The Tempest is more than romance, for its characters exceed the roles of villains and heroes, some of them becoming villains and heroes…The Tempest belongs not only to the world of romance, but also to the period of colonialism, written as it was in the early stages of the European exploration and conquest of the New World” (Mowat and Werstine). Mowat and Werstine’s idea that The Tempest is both a romantic novel and expresses colonialism is shown through the master mind of the story’s plot named Prospero. Towards the beginning of the novel, Shakespeare depicts Prospero as a poor man who is automatically assumed to be the hero of the story after Antonio and Alonso unfairly uproot him from his position as Duke of Milan and abandon him with his daughter at sea. Prospero describes the event saying “In few they hurried us aboard a bark, / bore us some leagues to sea… / There they hoist us / to the cry of th’ sea that roared to us” (1.2.172-177). Once Prospero settles on the island with his daughter, Miranda, he begins to take control of the island, announcing himself as ruler. The villainous aspect of Prospero’s character is apparent in the way he tortures Caliban after he enslaves him. Prospero’s negative attitude towards Caliban is shown when he says “Thou poisonous slave, got by the devil himself / upon thy wicked dam, come forth!” (1.2.383-384). In this excerpt Prospero calls Caliban a slave who is created by the devil, and beckons him to do his labor for him. Prospero’s character shows how The Tempest is a romance novel, in which he is originally made out to be the hero of the story, and then appears to become another villain along with Antonio or Alonso. Prospero’s plan to take revenge against the usurpers of his dukedom also represents an idealized situation in which all of Prospero’s ideas fall perfectly into place, which also represents an element of a romance novel. Prospero’s ability to use and control magic also aids him in his plot for revenge, and also…

In the Tempest, by Shakespeare we see the love of family, love of country, and personal love dominate The Tempest and inform nearly every significant action. Caliban loves the island, Ariel loves natural freedom, Prospero loves his daughter, Alonso his son, and so on. But the traitors Antonio and Sebastian are also defined by love, or really the lack thereof. They are in love with power, or the potential for it. In this play, each player is on a quest for some kind of love or another, fulfilling their own version of what it means to be appreciated and, in the case of the best, to appreciate others.…

Prospera is the female version of Prospero, in the movie. The first difference I noticed was that in the movie, Prospero is played by a woman, whereas in the play, it is a man. Prospera is not the Duke of Milan, but however is it the wife of the duke of Milan. As stated in the book about Caliban, “Which was not honored a human shape,” Act I scene 5(page: 31). Clearly, in the book Caliban was more of an animal type creature, with unnatural parts. In the modern movie, Caliban is shown as a half human- half monster. Antonio and Prospero are brothers, who may have a grudge against each other, but in the movie this relationship is a brother-sister relation. The movie is dissimilar to the original version of the play. Many scenes are cut out. The movie is modern with trendy, yet appealing costumes. Ferdinand and Miranda’s characters are quite similar to the ones in the book. Though this movie is a modern one, released two years ago, it has the same old English that was used in the play. This movie does not conclude to be as ‘The Tempest,’ but rather inspired by ‘The Tempest.’ The modern movie has its own meaning and many scenes are not included while others are changed. I like this movie, because the characteristics are more appealing. The costumes, music, and the cast all are very attractive. If there was just plain music or simple costumes, not identifying the character itself, would make the movie quite boring. The music makes more suspense. There are different sounds of music depending on the mood. For example; suspense and comedy have different sounds which make the movie more interesting.…
