The book that I chose to read was, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. In the book we learn about social issues that are not only found in Sweden but from all over the world. Through the book the two main characters solve a murder mystery from 40 years ago. While solving the murder mystery, social issues are brought up time and time again. One of major issues that are brought to the reader’s attention is sexual violence that is used towards women. The other issue that is preceded in the book is the image that Lisbeth Salander has of herself. One of the major social issues that are brought up in the book is sexual violence against Lisbeth Salander. Lisbeth Salander is the one of the main characters aside from Mikael Blomkvist. The first time violence is used in the book, is when Lisbeth Salanders is walking through the substation. She accidently runs into a group of thugs. The thug she ran in her decides to hold her in a choke hold until she bits him to break free. When she is released from his hold the whole group of thugs begins to push and kick her. They end up running away when Salander finds a broken bottle on the ground and decides to use it as a weapon in defense.
The second time violence is used against Salanders is when she is sexually abused by her parole officer, Nils Bjurman. Salanders proceeds to ask Bjurman for $20,000 to buy a new computer. Bjurman decides to use this to his full advantage by forcing Salanders to give him a sexual favor. The second time Bjurman sexually assaults Salanders is when he hits her many times and ties he to the bed. He this forces himself upon her. Bjurman tells Salanders that, “As long as she does what he wants then she will get what she wants”. Unknowing Bjurman will get a surprise when Salanders comes to him for something next time. Salander isn’t the only character in the movie that is sexually abused. After Salander was sexually abused by her parole officer
