Glastonbury Festival Essay
Thailand
Thailand is well known for a friendly people and the cultures. I was born in Thailand and grew up with a warm loving family. There are 8 members in my family which are my parents, nanny, granddad, 2 brothers and my auntie, including me and the dog Hunter. When I was a child my mom and dad normally goes to work early morning, my brother and I then stayed at home with my nanny, granddad and my auntie. On Saturday at 6.00am I normally got to the market with my Nan we used to go there by an old motorbike which my Nan brought it since she was 30 and at that time she was 60. I go there often and a lot of the people around there will recognize me every time I go because I was the only girl around there that has a curly hair and also a mixed of Thai and British. Thai people were the most giving, caring, respectful people and always has a great big smile on their face this is the reason why I’m proud of my birth country. The other thing I’m proud of my country is the food luckily my Nan cooks the most delicious food in the world especially egg fried rice. We don’t go out to eat outside that often because my Nan cooks at home every day and it’s so delicious that you just don’t want to go eat outside. Although it’s really cheap to go eat outside, Thai people will order a lot of different curries or food they like and share it around the table. One curries only cost a pound so it is cheap to go out and eat although if you go to a 5 star restaurant it will be more expensive than that. At school we learn 6 subjects per day which are Thai languages, English, math, science and social/history.

A poem I have recently read and enjoyed is ‘Glasgow 5th march 1971’ by Edwin Morgan. It is about a young couple who have been pushed into a jeweller’s window as two youths try to rob a shop on Sauchiehall Street late at night. Two drivers witness this crime and turn a blind eye to it and drive on like nothing happened.…

On the night of Monday, October 16th, I had the opportunity to perform as part of the Wind Ensemble in the SHS Fall Concert. The ensemble consisted of woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Our band presented two pieces in the concert: a program and an overture. Although we were not as prepared for the concert as I’d hoped, I opine that the wind ensemble performed rather successfully.…

Growing up in Southern West Virginia I wasn’t exposed to many different cultures. My little farm community was made up of mainly family. There was one restaurant, three churches, one Elementary school, one Jr. High and one Senior High School. As time progressed we got our first Chinese restaurant, it was a big hit. During lunch time at school my friends and I would sneak out the back and head to the buffet, this was a fun part of my teenage years. Several years later a Mexican restaurant was added, and became equally popular. Our little community is still small but these two restaurants remain, and thrive.…

On February 19, 2015, Jared Blum at the Sacramento State University had his first concert of the spring semester featuring plenty of special guests. This concert was presented as partial fulfillment of the requirements that he needs for his Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies. Jared Blum, with his special guests (Megan Spurlock on the clarinet, Morgan Childres on the trombone, the Jazz Combo, the Jazz Essemble, and other special guests), collectively performed nine pieces along with a medley that compromised of three songs at the concert. Prior to taking this course, one of the first questions that I asked myself was “what do I know about jazz?” I have always consociated jazz music with the African American culture, mainly because of the general idea of how jazz music can give off a “bluesy” rhythm. Little did I know how diverse jazz music can be. “Creole Belles”, “Creep”, and the medley that compromised of “When you’re smiling”, “Swing that music”, and “Shiek of Araby” are the pieces that allowed the audience, including myself, to experience the diversity of jazz music.…

When one thinks of hippie movement of the 1960s, a few things come to mind: namely free love, drugs, and rock-n-roll. These things represented the counterculture of the time, in which the youth of the nation we rebelling against the stricter conservative values of their parents’ generation. All this came to a peak for three days in the summer of 1969, near the little town of Bethel, New York, in what was called the Woodstock Festival. Few would know it at the time, but it would become the defining moment of the age of the hippie.…

The first Kerrville Folk Festival was the best way to learn about different humanities. There were many people from all-over. The first festival was “held June 1 through 3, 1972, in the 1,200-seat Kerrville Municipal Auditorium; 2,800 fans from all over Texas and as far away as Colorado attended the thirteen-performer event” (Rod Kennedy, 2013) (para. 1). “The festivals at Kerrville were a direct outgrowth of the Austin Zilker Park KHFI–FM Summer Music festivals (1964–68), the Chequered Flag folk-music club on Lavaca Street in Austin (1967–70), and the eight Longhorn Jazz festivals (1966–73), as well as the "live" and recorded programs of Austin folk artists produced on KHFI–AM–FM–TV during the 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s” (Rod Kennedy, 2013) (para. 1). The festival kept expanding and more people were coming.…

The Chinese are inextricable from the history of Thailand’s development, notably due to the fact that they were instrumental in the flourishing of the agricultural industry and even helped Thailand discover as well as exploit one of its prime commodities, sugar. The monarchy also prospered from their labour, taxes and not least from their vices: gambling drinking and smoking opium. Thailand is frequently lauded as a model for harmonious multi-cultural co-existence and respectable levels of national unity between the Chinese and the indigenous, despite the ‘threatening’ presence of the Chinese in the economic and political…

    South Asian Gender Roles

Although their lives may not primarily consist of their South Asian culture, eating the cuisine will remind them of their heritage therefore the way it is produced is important; it must be able to create the nostalgic feeling (Berger, 1961). It is a part of the South Asian woman’s identity. It must be noted because of the immigration of South Asians to western countries, the use of pre-food has becoming increasingly used within South Asian households. Although the food is not a true reflection of true South Asian cuisine it allows a sense of re-connecting with their heritage hence displaying food within their identity. The use of microwavable rice, echoes South Asian’s of their heritage, however it must be noted pre-packaged food hold stigma since it can be understood to lack true authenticity- some of the heritage is lost through such foods, as there is no real love and affection connected to it the way a South Asian woman would create it (Sriniva, 2006). For a South Asian woman to use pre- made supermarket food, albeit South Asian type cuisine, this will create negative stigma towards her and she may be seen to be a failure by the community and her family. We must understand this is a burden to South Asian women to cook everything from scratch, to use short cuts, such as pre- cooked rice, is…

As I contemplated on what my cultural plunge was going to be, it made me realize that I am lucky to say that I have been exposed and acquainted with maybe more than the usual. My ex-husband is Middle Eastern, I am Mexican, and I have homo-sexual friends, and have and had friends that are African-American, Caucasian, Japanese, Filipino, Jewish, and Korean. I finally chose to explore more of the Asian culture because although I have friends that are Asian I liked to know more about their culture. Being that I love to cook, I decided to go to an Asian market. As I searched the internet for suggestions on where to go, I found 99 Ranch Market to have the highest ratings. 99 Ranch Market is an Asian market located in Clairmont.…

This year at PXHS there was a great musical called the Music Man. The musical was truly serious and hilarious. There were many phrases and jokes being said that I did not understand, but the adults did. I saw that the people who played the characters practiced hard on the dancing, singing and acting. They had to memorize many lines, especially Harold Hill and Marian Paroo. The musical took place in River City. It was a story about a librarian/piano teacher and a traveling salesman. At first, they did not really like each other, but in some way, they fell in love. The musical was very fascinating, beautiful, and humorous.…

When our server came I ordered what I had researched to be a traditional Thai meal of kaeng phet or Red Curry with chicken. The dish consisted of bamboo shoots, carrots, bell pepper, kabocha squash and Thai basil leaves all in a red curry paste and coconut milk. The waitress informed me that it was the spicier of the curries and offered to bring a spice tray out too, “just in case I wanted a little extra.” Along with…
