Minority Cultures in West Virginia
Section D
During the following pages I would like to explore Mexican and Chinese culture. I will take a look at their commonalities or differences among cuisine which will include popular ingredients as well as a one ingredient, dairy, which Asian cooks shy away from. Also discussed in this paper will be religious ideas in both cultures which will include historical background as well as current traditions and last but not least strengths and weaknesses in education.
Growing up in Southern West Virginia I wasn’t exposed to many different cultures. My little farm community was made up of mainly family. There was one restaurant, three churches, one Elementary school, one Jr. High and one Senior High School. As time progressed we got our first Chinese restaurant, it was a big hit. During lunch time at school my friends and I would sneak out the back and head to the buffet, this was a fun part of my teenage years. Several years later a Mexican restaurant was added, and became equally popular. Our little community is still small but these two restaurants remain, and thrive.
