The early voyages by the Portuguese and Spanish were motivated by gold, trade and the spread of the Catholic faith through religious conversion. The voyages of a few adventurers show that the Spanish and Portuguese goals were to spread Catholicism, expand trade, and expand the kingdom of the Spanish and the Portuguese to the new lands they’ve discovered. These adventures were Christopher Columbus who attempted to find a new route to Asia to extend Spain’s trade and to colonize, Bartholomew Columbus and his successful founding of Santo Domingo, Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca and his companion’s successful spread of Catholic religion to many Indians tribes through healing and protecting the Indians and Francisco Vasquez de Coronado whose primary goal was to find the fabled riches of the seven Cites of Cibola.
The first voyages to America were done by Christopher Columbus. In 1492 Christopher Columbus was approved by Isabella I, Queen of Castile and her husband Ferdinand II, King of Aragon to voyage out to India. Christopher Columbus would make four voyages. During the First voyage he landed on an island which he named San Salvador, although the native population called it Guanahani. Christopher Columbus believed that the people of this island could be converted to Christianity easily. He wrote in a letter to Luis de Sant’Angel: “…furthermore may become Christians; for they are inclined to the love and service of their Highnesses and all of the Castilian nation, and they strive to combine in giving us things which they have in abundance, and of which we are in need.” January the next year he would return from his first voyage and bring several natives with him.
