The investigator must remain focus on the objective while the supervisor provides the resources needed to conduct the investigation properly and professionally. The area in which higher level police Administration becomes useful is to remove the pressures involved in these types of high profile investigations. Politics, victim’s families, the media can interfere with the mission at hand.
Organization of a task force may be necessary when involving other law enforcement agencies. Communication with other agencies is critical to a successful conclusion to a serial murder investigation. The task force is made up of a lead investigator, other experienced investigators, administrators, liaisons, and any other necessary personnel. A clear line of communication is vital between each member of the task force as well as a close and cooperative working relationship when conducting the investigation. Providing this specific authority is the responsibility of the administrator assigned to the task force. It is important that any additional personnel assigned for the duration to the case be brought up to speed on the investigation. However, it is also important not to reassign to much additional personnel, causing disorganization and affect the investigation negatively.
Communication is important as a serial murder investigation progresses. Information needs to be disseminated to all involved in the task force and should be conducted face to face. This is done through regular scheduled briefings and daily roll calls. The information passed from throughout the various agencies may be what is need to link other crimes possibly committed by the offender, which may lead to an arrest.
Data Management is the timely input of information into a data base. This is a typical problem faced by all investigators.
