1. If you were in charge of the Asian operations for McCain, how would you recommend the company overcome the challenges in the Chinese market?
If I were in charge of Asian operations for McCain, I would take an advertising approach to overcome challenges in the Chinese market. The most effective way is to have famous figures/celebrities as the face of McCain. This method has been proven successful in other advertising campaigns, such as Yao Ming in the anti-shark fin consumption campaign and Jay Chou/Kobe Bryant in Sprite commercials. In both cases, the awareness of both campaigns was widespread and well known. In the shark fin case, the appearance of NBA legend Yao Ming has led to more awareness of the dwindling shark population. Likewise, when Sprite faced the likes of singer sensation Jay Chou and NBA star Kobe Bryant, the popularity of Sprite increased. It can thus be concluded that the use of celebrities or famous figures will lead to popularity in a product. As well, the price of McCain products will have to initially be very low, as a conservative society will not want to spend a lot of money on an unknown item.
2. Drawing from Hofstede’s work on global cultures, what challenges might Canadian managers at McCain face when interacting with their Chinese business colleagues?
Hofstede’s works on global cultures are masculinity-femininity, uncertainty avoidance, individualism-collectivism, and power distance. The Canadian managers at McCain might end up with different point of view on individualism and collectivism when working with their Chinese business colleagues. The Canadian managers have lower collectivism than the Chinese business colleagues, because the Chinese colleagues are expected to work collaboratively compared with Canadian managers who look more after themselves.     Answer 1: If I was in charge of Asian operations for McCain Foods Limited, the first thing I would do is look into what I can do to get my product famous among the Chinese people, by finding out what their likes and dislikes are and how I can make my product appealing to them. This can be done by carrying out market research and surveys. Granted this costs a lot of money, but to succeed in any foreign market, one should first be aware of their cultures, factors that can offend them or intrigue them to buy your products. Without proper preparation and research, I would not step into a foreign market. For example, with proper research you can find out that the Chinese people feel more comfortable with the color red, as it symbolizes good luck to them, so I would make sure the packaging used is of the red color.     The recent growth in globalization has driven organizations to expand offshore to reduce cost and increase profitability. Consequently, the issue of intercultural management becomes an essential knowledge required by international management. More specifically, in order to effectively to mange and communicate with foreign employees, it is imperative to understand national cultures. Different theories were examined to identify the differences in different culture. Most notably, the Hofstede cultural dimension theory was examined extensively to demonstrate varies cultural norms and consequently five elements were identified; they are individualism- collectivism, uncertainty avoidance, power distance, masculinity- femininity and long-term orientation. Further, contextual communication styles and nonverbal language were also examined extensively to explain how culture has significant influenced towards our communication styles. Ultimately, this report has illustrated the importance of cultural understanding during international management, and has also suggested several different methods for managers to adopt to overcome cultural barriers.
