What impact has the internet had on globalization?
Globalization has become more widespread due to advances in information technology. The foundation of information technology is the internet, which produced the World Wide Web, and is one of the greatest influences on the development of globalization. The internet has transformed how people work, provides a platform where companies that are thousands of miles away can communicate and share information almost instantaneously. The impact of the internet on globalization has both positive and negative effects. A positive effect is that the internet has enabled companies to improve their competiveness and become more productive, due to the ease of electronic transactions and the speed of access to information. This allows a company based in the United States to have a customer call center in India, staffed by highly trained staff but with lower wage costs. Also, the rise of smart phones are changing the dynamics of communication and giving more people access to the internet. This actually increases the use of the internet among American population groups regardless of income, race or ethnicity, geographic location, age or gender. At the same time, a negative effect that the internet has on globalization is that countries in developing worlds are not able to take advantage of the internet in the same way as developed nations can. In some countries, political control allows government to censor and ban access to certain websites, causing a disadvantage to people and businesses. Also, recently there has been as increase in credit fraud which leaves people scared to do online transactions.
