Project Proposal

Overview of Organization
The organization that I will be using for my course project, will be the Internal Revenue Service. Headquartered in Washington, DC, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is a bureau of the Department of Treasury and is under the direction of the Commissioner of Internal Revenue. The IRS is one of the world’s most efficient tax administrators and is responsible for collecting taxes, interpreting, and enforcing the Internal Revenue code. The IRS is primarily known by our citizens for administering tax refunds every year. The IRS mission statement is to “Provide America’s taxpayers quality service by helping them understand and meet their tax responsibilities

My position is as a Disclosure Scanning Specialist and I have been with the unit since July 2010. I came to the unit six months after it’s inception and as you can imagine, just like every new operation, things are chaotic in a sense. There is an atmosphere of tension most of the time and that is directly reflected from the manager. It is ongoing and most, if not all, of the employees (which total about 15) don’t feel appreciated or valued. We are constantly bombarded with work and asked to do things that are out of the scope of the operation. Organization is something that is a real problem and that is mostly attributed to the fact that we, and all the equipment, paperwork, and supplies, are packed into one office area. Morale is very low. No one in our department feels that the IRS is very concerned with the things that make our jobs difficult, as they are with getting the results that they’re seeking. I would like to explore different options that can be pursued to lighten the mood, raise the morale, and change the atmosphere that we work in. I would also like to place a special focus on the manager of our unit and suggest how he can use better management techniques that can show appreciation and concern for the

Gas prices fluctuate due to oil prices and the anticipated supply and demand worldwide. Whenever there is political unrest in a major oil producing country you will see an increase in gas prices due to the demand of oil potentially produced decreasing. Very rarely do gas prices follow the general supply and demand because if they did gas prices would be lower currently. In my hometown of Augusta, GA gas prices are always below the national average and with us bordering South Carolina many Augustans travel the short distance to pay lower prices in South Carolina which are usually $0.10-$0.15 cheaper. Much as the rest of the world goes whenever there is a threat to the supply of oil, regardless of having a surplus currently, the gas prices in this area see a $0.10-$0.20 increase sometimes within a 30 minute period.…

    A) The graph given to us depicts the GDP of five decades and indicates how consumption (consumers), government spending, gross private domestic investment, and net exports have contributed to the economy for the past 50 years. We look at the percentage calculation of each component of GDP. We realize that Government spending is the most stable and after that comes Gross private domestic investment. According to our graph, in 1965 the smallest contribution to GDP was Net Exports with 0.78% of total GDP. These computations were done by taking the sectors contribution and dividing it by the GDP with respect to the year. In 2005, Consumption has the largest contribution to GDP of 70.19% of total GDP.…

We are here to discuss the “Theme Park” project that we were set to complete. To date we are 40% complete with the project. We currently do not have any actual costs associated with the project so we can assume that they are in order. The organization that will be used as the topic of my course project will be my current employer, Cullum Detuners, Ltd. (CDL). CDL is a design-build company that provides acoustic support for the gas turbine industry. The headquarters for the company is U.K. based and employs mainly British personnel for the management team. Over the last few years the company has been extremely profitable but growth has been stagnant. Workload in our U.K. facilities has diminished even during this extremely busy work time for the company. In the recent years the management team has determined that the actual fabrication of the products could be off-shored at tremendous cost savings to the organization. This reduction in U.K. factory workers has caused some strife within the home office.…

In an effort to improve the relations between the factory workers and management staff organizational development should be implemented. Organizational development (OD) is a family of techniques designed to help organizations change for the better (Spector, 2008 p.2). The entire organization is involved in the assessment of the factory’s operation as it would entail re-organization, creating new departments, and allocating the functions of the workers. Before any change can be implemented the factory should utilize a successful change agent which would be responsible for over-seeing sessions between groups. One of the tasks of the change agent would be to create a desire among the factory workers to accept any changes.…

I believe that Joanna should recommend that Sam Wilson reorganize and restructure the department as a whole. They should assign roles to each individual depending on their job description, to avoid the problem of having some people doing more work than others. Also, the top management has to involve the department in decision making and engaging them in giving ideas and enhancing their services. For example, setting weekly or quarterly goals and trying to meet them. This step also allows the organization to evaluate themselves and knowing how they’re doing. The more the workers get involved in the strategic part of planning, the more they feel obliged to meet those goals and the more they feel loyal to the organization.…

We are not inborn with the leadership trait. The function of leadership is to make the business a success. It is not the exclusively the playing field of senior managers. Managers and employees alike are required to be the bridge between the customer and the vision of Wells Fargo. A low morale affects the production rate and the quality of what is being produced. The trust gained from customers can be lost with quality and other issues which directly affects them. The management should improve its visibility amongst the workforce, should encourage the workers to pool in their ideas of improvement and create a stable atmosphere in order to stay afloat. Employees are the most precious assets of an organization as employees make or destroy an organization. The plant manager instead of wasting time by doubting the credibility of the plan he implemented, should have immediately switched to damage control mode and tried to revive the plant by making changes which were discussed…

Positive or negative, change can be challenging to manage because employees need to be on board and be obliged to make necessary changes as well as adjust his or her work habits. When implementing change, a manager may run into numerous obstacles from resistance from the staff to morale issues. This is primarily caused by a lack of understanding by the employees and a fear of how the change will affect him or her directly. Implementing change within an organization can be extremely difficult without a manager who understands d his or her role and responsibilities. This could be the deciding factor of whether or not the organization will succeed or fail when instituting change to the establishment (Mihai, 2009). It is the manager’s responsibility to understand how to address and put the change into action along with properly overseeing resistance from the staff. A manager must effectively assess, plan, implement, and evaluate the change he or she intends to put into practice to abet the staff in adjusting to modification.…

In this case study Roger Cahill has been acting as the head of mobile division for less than a year. Currently he is struggling as he faces great difficulties adapting BoldFlash to a changing marketplace. The problem really started a year ago when Mr. Jim Harrison appointed the young Roger Cahill to a VP position. Although Roger has led a research project in his previous work, he is only 24 years old and inexperienced to manage a company at VP level. Positions at those levels require years of strategic leadership and management skills. Nevertheless in the last 12 months, the company focused primarily on the redundant production of customized chips without further research or product development in new and upcoming areas like the storage device. This negligence from both product development and marketing is a huge loss to the company as they missed out on the opportunity to launch new product line; therefore missed the opportunity to penetrate the potential market. Now the company has old products not priced competitively and struggling to penetrate the marketshare. Also the four groups within the division, product development, marketing, sales and manufacturing are constantly in conflict and don’t have the reinforcement from the leadership to work as a team. Although Cahill has observed the dysfunctions, he has not implemented any processes or trainings to work as a cross functional team. The company’s profit margins are low and Cahill has to take initiatives to suggest number of changes. With the staff that has low morale and lacking motivation, Cahill has to develop action plan for improvement. He has to define roles and propose organization change design to deliver an outcome necessary to be successful and generate higher profits.…
