“Hey Chloe, look what I found!” said my younger sister, Christy. “Shush! We are in the library! You should not shout!” I hissed. Christy waved the book under my eyes. I looked at the book cover and said, “This book is about the Gobi desert and it sounds interesting.” I started flipping through the pages. All of a sudden, everything in the library was gone. I found myself all alone with my sister beside me in a hot and sandy desert. I panicked. I didn’t know what to do. Then, I felt the hot wind on my face. I knew from what I learned about ghosts that a ghost was coming. A few seconds later, a white figure stood in front of me. It said, “Thank you for coming to the Gobi desert. You are now a new challenger to the Gobi desert. …show more content…
You will have to pass three challenges to return to your own country in addition to the money that you will receive from me as a reward. Your first challenge is to feed the wild arctic foxes. The second is to train the Gobi wolves, and finally, the last one is to kill at least one Gobi worm. I would have to warn you that everyone who has become a challenger has died during the Gobi worm fight. If you cannot complete the three challenges by tomorrow morning, then you will have to stay in the Gobi Desert or Mongolia for five years and serve the people here.”
Chapter 2 – Arctic Foxes, Hello?
After the white figure finished talking about the challenge, it disappeared into the misty thin air, which made Christy and me panic even more. We did not want to do the challenge. We did not want to die or be a slave. I had to think fast to save myself and Christy. I had a few ideas on my mind. One, kill myself in the desert. Two, call the ghost back using the magic words. Three, do all the challenges, get the money, and return home. I didn’t have much time left to decide, so I chose to do all the challenges. Christy and I set off to find the arctic foxes. As we went, tears rolled down my pale cheeks. I didn’t know anything about the Gobi Desert. I didn’t know what to do. My mind was completely blank. I had no idea where to go, so we kept on walking. After half an hour, Christy was starting to get tired. She said, “Chloe, do you have any idea where to find the foxes?” I said, “I don’t have any clue about where we should go, but I have faith in myself. I know that we will overcome this challenge. Come on Christy, you want to survive right? Now, let us sit down and have a rest, and then we will start walking again.”
Chapter 3 – HA! FOUND YOU!
We rested for about 10 minutes and started walking again. I knew that we will find the arctic foxes soon. After 10 more minutes of walking, Christy found paw prints on the sandy road. She told me about them and she started to track the prints. The prints led us to a big cave. We knew that foxes lived in caves. However, we need to find food for them first. We placed a mark in front of the cave and set off to find some food. Christy and I found some wood and decided to construct a mini catapult to shoot some birds. We successfully caught five large birds and carried them back to the cave. When we entered the cave, we found five arctic foxes. The birds we caught were just enough for all of them.
Feeding the foxes was difficult for us because the foxes were aggressive. They growled and scratched us. We endured many scratches on our bodies and we were seriously bleeding. But we knew that we should never give up. “Phew! That was tough.” I thought. We’ve got to leave this horrible desert. I tried to find something to stop the bleeding. I dug through my pockets and all I found was a cotton ball. But regardless, I have to stop this bleeding. So I used the cotton ball and started wiping the blood from my wounds and Christy’s. After that, we set off for the next challenge.
Chapter 4 – Pick… Hmmm… YOU!
Feeding the arctic foxes was exhausting, and we still had to face another challenge! We were really stepping out of our comfort zone, and the thought of the difficulties that we have yet to face are already driving us insane. Feeding the arctic foxes was more difficult than feeding the naughtiest babies in the world, How much more difficult would it be to TRAIN Gobi wolves? For grown-ups who are professionally trained to train wild animals, this task may be simple. But first, we must find Gobi wolves. How are we supposed to find them in this desert? I started to look around for tracks and then saw apparent fresh droppings of Gobi wolves. I knew that they were Gobi wolf droppings because I’ve learned something about wolves and the shape of their droppings. However, I only found a few of them. I started to find paw prints, and then… “Howl, Howl, Howl!” They were the howls of a wolf. I followed the sound, and not for long, I walked into a pack of wolves. The pack had about 10 wolves. Among them, I selected two to three wolves to train by observing their personalities first and then distinguished which wolf can best understand the “rules”. I picked two wolves. Both were males and approximately two years old. They were really cute! When I looked into their eyes, they started to make cute little puppy faces that slightly melted my heart. I chose the male wolves not because they were cuter than the female wolves, but because I found female wolves extremely naughty. They never listen, fierce, and they can bite or harm us.
Chapter 5 – James and Michael
The two wolves that Christy and I selected were named James and Michael. First, we taught them to say, “My name is James/Michael.” Christy then gave me a really good idea. She told me to train them in the same manner as that for dogs. To obtain some snacks or treats for them, I asked Christy to hunt for some birds while I find other ways to train them. I decided to let them try to mimic my lips as I say the words, “My name is James”, without producing any sound. James was able to get the tone, and he said, “Ro rarmees Rames.” The exercise was extremely fun! By the time he learned his name, Christy arrived with a number of birds! I gave James one of the birds as a reward. To speed up the process, I decided to focus on James while Christy trains Michael. After training the wolves to say their names by imitating our lip movements, we taught simple tricks such as “sit”, “stay”, “hand”, and “jump”. I found a way to make them give us their paws for a handshake! We say “hand”, and then, while holding their paws gently, we repeated the word approximately 10 times. After a number of repetitions, the wolves immediately responded to the command, “hand”, and they extend their cute little paws! The outcome was really amazing! Meanwhile, teaching the wolves to jump was difficult because we must ensure that they do not hurt themselves while jumping. Otherwise, they can tear a human to pieces like sharks trying to eat their prey. One of my friends was hurt by a wolf, and she necessarily went to the hospital and had 10 stitches on her arm! I definitely do not want the same thing to happen to me, especially in the middle of a desert where no hospital is present to provide treatment. Whoops!!!! James was mad! He was about to bite and scratch me!!! Michael ran to James to calm him by placing his paws on James’ back and give him a little nudge. Without Michael, I would have been dead by now! James then became guilty of what he did to me and he licked my face and howled softly. My heart melted, and I gave him a tight hug to show that I was ok and expressed hope that he would not harm me again. I was really proud that he willingly apologized on what he did. I then gave him a little treat in exchange. I also gave Michael a treat because he saved me and another as a “Little Hero Treat”. I never expected that wolves are “kindhearted”! I continued to train James and Michael. An hour later, I finally completed my second challenge and then moved forward the next challenge. As we said our goodbyes, I expressed hope that we will see each other again.
Chapter 6 – The worm disaster
As we seemingly walked endlessly, my sister asked anxiously, “Chloe, what is our last challenge? Will it be very difficult to do? Will it take a long time?” I then replied, “I promise that if you have faith in me, we can do anything no matter how difficult it is. Now keep calm and listen. Our last challenge is to kill at least a Gobi worm. Gobi worms are very dangerous. They can hurt you with an electric shock from its tail. They can even spray the most toxic acid through its mouth. We better make ourselves a protective coat before we find the worms. We can use some foil to make it.” Christy inquired in frustration, “Where can we find some foil? This is a desert! Stop dreaming Chloe, we can NEVER find foil in a desert! This is not Minecraft!!! Things aren’t made out of blocks and we can’t have ‘Diamond Axes’! We don’t even have something called a ‘Crafting Table’ in real life. Anyway, there is no point of dreaming that we can ‘dig down’ this sand even if we can. We will just get electric shock from those Gobi worms. Ugh!!!” “You seem to forget that I have special powers, Christy!” I said. “Oh yeah! Can you say the magic word now?” said Christy.
Chapter 7 – Survival is number one
After Christy calmed down, I started to murmur the secret word. Two sets of army clothes then suddenly dropped down from the sky. Christy and I wore them while we searched for the Gobi worms. Gobi worms live deep under the thick soil and sand of the Gobi Desert. They are incredibly dangerous because they could attack you at any time. The task was burdensome that I almost gave up on doing it. I suddenly regret reading the book that brought me to this miserable desert! It was getting dark, and no Gobi worm could be found. We were really exhausted. “I’m hungry!” moaned Christy. Then I thought on how we are going to build a fort or find a place where we could rest. How are we going to find food or water in the middle of the desert with dangerous animals and worms that can harm you within seconds? I was terrified. I felt like killing myself right now, but who would take care of poor Christy? She is only 10. How do I expect a 10-year-old girl to survive in a deadly desert like this if she does not even know how to obtain all the supplies that she needs to survive in the wild, such as fruits, water, and branches that she could use to build a nice fort. No, no, no… JUST NO! I can’t leave her here… I just can’t. I am her sister! How could I do such a horrible thing to my sister!? Quick! THINK !!!! WHERE CAN I FIND FOOD? Suddenly, I had an idea! I could use the catapult that I made and shoot some birds with it! Then, I am going to find some tree branches and create a campfire! I could cook the meat with it!!! What a GENIUS I AM!!! I told Christy about my idea and we started to get to work. At first, it was a challenge for us to find a tree in the middle of the desert and gather its branches. The climate was starting to become cold. Hence, we must work quickly to create a campfire that will keep us warm. Suddenly, I sensed something under my feet, its movement shook the ground, or… or… perhaps the entire desert!!! The slithering creature was huge and horrible-looking!!! Before I realized what happened, ZAP!!!! IT WAS A GOBI WORM!!! WE HAD TO ACT QUICKLY!!! I told Christy to run and get some sticks so I could create a torch. She came back with a large load of sticks that were sufficient to make a fort and 10 to 20 torches and, most importantly, to set the Gobi worm on fire!!!
Chapter 8 –Ha hahahahaha… WHA…..???
We were certain that it was a Gobi worm.
None of the animals in this universe could use electricity and zap people with its tail except the Gobi worm and the electric eel. The creature was not an electric eel because it thrived in the water. In a blink of an eye, the Gobi worm flew into the air and chased us. Using my full speed, I ran toward the Gobi worm and kicked it with all the energy I had. However, the Gobi worm was too big, strong, powerful, and tough to kick. I then recalled how Gobi worms chase their prey. They leap into the air and start jumping up and down in the hope to smash its victim to be as flat as a pancake. I thought, TOUGH LUCK PAL!!! Equipped with my armor made of foil, I grabbed the sticks, lit them with fire, and started throwing them at the worm. The worm was at least two meters thick and 30 feet long, which was... HUGE!!! I told Christy to keep throwing fire sticks at the worm to set it on fire as I get some more sticks to get fire. We worked well together against the Gobi worm. I wondered how long will it take for us to kill the beast. Our fire sticks were no match to its huge size. The Gobi worm was a tough beast to fight and charged at me like mad. It tried zapping me with electric current, but failed. It tried to cut me in half, but missed. “Shame on you!” I thought. It got really mad and started to drill holes under the hot sand. At this moment, Christy returned with a huge armful of
sticks!
Chapter 9 – Wizard? IS SHE A WITCH?
MU HAHAAHAHAHHAHA!!! I’m going to kill you, you huge beast! Just wait till I... AHHHHHHHH!!!!! Run!!!!!! The Gobi worm reads minds! What the... What on earth is happening, I never knew that Gobi worms read minds. That is just creepy! It heard my thoughts on my plans to kill it! I resolved to act quickly by telling Christy to sharpen one of the sticks and start stabbing the Gobi worm while I throw fire sticks. Despite its numerous wounds, the Gobi worm continued to attack us. At this moment, we couldn’t find any more sticks! I started to murmur another secret code... ABSLAKRISFLIS! BOOM! One thousand sticks lit with fire then fell from the sky! I lifted Christy up and she started to aim at the head of the Gobi worm while I threw sticks at its body. I set her down when I started stabbing the Gobi worm. Suddenly, a BRILLIANT, AMAZING idea came to my mind. I could stab it on the chest! Ha Ha!!! When I found the location of its heart, I stabbed it repeatedly. The Gobi worm became weaker and weaker. At the last ounce of my strength, I remembered that I possess powers that are really strong to kill a beast immediately. I shouted as Harry Potter and Hermione would do in casting a spell. “ABSLODKSSF!” I had my palm facing the worm’s face and something like blue abstract strings wrapped around it. Within five to ten minutes, the Gobi worm died!!!! WOOHOO! VICTORY!!! I CAN’T WAIT FOR THE NEXT DAY UNTIL I GET BACK HOME!!! Christy and I made a fort for us to sleep. And as we always do every night, we said our prayers before retiring to bed.
Chapter10 – HOME SWEET HOME!
The next day, the white figure appeared and said that he was surprised that we managed to survive and successfully complete the tough challenges. He awarded us with USD 10 billion!!! I was excited for us to finally return home!!! We said our goodbyes to the white figure, thanked him, and then went through the portal. In an instant, I found myself back in the library. “CHLOE!!! CHLOE!!! HELLO? HELLO?” Wait, who was that? “Chloe, it’s me! Christy!” When I saw her, I smiled and said, “I am really glad that we made it through that horrible Gobi Desert!” Christy looked confused and exclaimed, “You know, you were day dreaming just now...?” I then realized that it was only a dream. It wasn’t real. Everything was just my imagination. I wished they were real though. But the truth is… I do have super powers.
