It all begins with a poor man, a father, who has 12 children, with the 13th on the way. Knowing he cannot take care of his last child, he turns to another possible guardian, Death. In his hands, the child soon grows up to become a doctor, and along with Death, the main character. This story is “Godfather Death”, a great fable in which we learn that greed is the root of all evil, and that one cannot cheat death.
The doctor is now Death’s Godson, and is the protagonist of this story. He is a hero who grows up to be a famous doctor, and the story revolves around him. The king offers her hand in marriage, along with the crown, to the one who rescues her, as it states, “Then he proclaimed that whosoever rescued her from death should become her husband and inherit the crown” (Grimm 2). The end of the story was complete shock and unexpected. He thought that, by being the Godson of Death, he could cheat and still be protected, but no one in this life can cheat death and get away with it. The Grimm brothers suggest more than one moral of this story. Mchugh writes “'respect one's elders,' 'do not take advantage of second chances,' and 'do not abuse gifts of power'” (McHugh 1). It also shows that greed is a root of all evil and must be avoided at all costs. How much fame and power does one need in order to be happy in life? Everyone must thank for all that we already have and take all the warnings seriously.
