Parthenon. An ionic column stands on a base that separates the shaft of the column from the platform (stylobate). The cap is enriched with egg-and-dart. Egg-and-dart has an elegant design that gives the columns great character. At first the volutes were layered in a single plane. After some time, there was a shift in that they would be angled out in the corners. The angling of the volutes on the corner columns ensured equilibrium in both front and side views. This new feature that was added in the Ionic order made it more flexible and pleasing. Under the volutes the Ionic column had a wide collar that separated the capital from the fluted shaft.
They may have had even a drape of fruits and flowers from the clefts formed by the volutes. The standard hollows of flutes in the shaft were 24. This allowed for a familiar proportion to the diameter of the column at any scale. No matter what height the column was. Greek fluting runs edged straight down. The Ionic columns are much more slender then the Doric. The Ionic columns shafts were taller than the Doric’s. Ionic columns are eight and nine diameters tall. The Iconic columns are the most popularly used in history. For example, Inigo Jones used plain Ionic columns on his Banqueting House at Whitehall Palace in London. John Russell Pope used Ionic columns unfluted on the Roosevelt memorial at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.
