New customs, an absent father, limited freedom. These are some of the issues that Maya and Ted have to undergo after immigrating from Russia to America and losing connections with his family. Both Ted, the main character of author Alma Luz Villanueva’s “Golden Glass” and Maya the main character of author Jean Davies Okimoto’s “My Favorite Chaperone” have many complications in their families, but in the end they progress and build stronger relationships.

When Maya gets into the car she knows that are father is disappointed and angry at her because of her actions so she takes her mind to gymnastics. Gymnastics takes Maya to her place of peace when she is having complications in her family like the one she is going through now. After the big altercation at Maya’s house her mother comes home from work with a broken ankle. Until her mother’s recovery Maya takes full responsibility of her mother’s work because she feels that it is her fault. As Maya is cooking her brother notices her slip and takes it upon himself to ask his parents for permission for her to attend. They grant Maya permission because Nurzhan will attend as her chaperone. Maya’s mother says how she forget sometimes that she is a young girl and she has way too many responsibilities. Mamma is starting to understand American traditions. “This bracelet my mother gave to me when I was sixteen. Girls and boys dance younger here, Maya” In the story “Golden Glass” Ted tells his mother that he will spend the entire summer in the house and will not come in for anything, not even food. As Ted is getting his sleeping place set up he starts to think about his father and that he has been gone for a long time now. Ted seems to not miss his father one bit. As the summer continues Ted seems to not miss anyone inside the house, except
