Being as the golf swing is so complex, the simple aspect of the setup stage for beginners is to learn the grip and the stance. Start by standing and holding the club in your bottom hand (right hand), where the grip meets the shaft. The shaft should be at an angle where the club head is at your forehead, toward the sky, and the grip is at your waist. Moving onto the grip, you must place the club in the fingers of your left hand and wrap your fingers around the grip. Next, lay the rest of your top left hand on the grip, so that the palm lightly touches the grip. Slide your bottom right hand toward your top hand, and keep the grip in your fingers until both hands touch. From here there are a few things you can do; you can either interlock your pinky finger and index finger, or have your pinky overlap your index finger (make sure to hold the club as if you were holding an egg - not too tight because if you are tight then it will cause you to strike the ball wrongly upon impact. The finished grip should be with the fingers, rather than with the palms of your hands; thus, completing the first stage: the grip and the stance.…

My backhand is one of my weaker shots. I’ve been trying to get it right, and I made the mistake of trying to go to two handed which made it worse because I had to start again and lost the little skill I had by playing a one handed shot. Now I’m back to one handed shots, I tend to try to hit them flat, but it ends up with a bit of a slice. I need to practice keeping my racquet flat and not try and add to much top spin because I try to hard and hit the ball with the bottom of my racquet which sends it flying in any random direction.…

I was terrified I would hook the ball to the out of bounds ground and spoil my 45. “Just keep your head down, stare at the ball, and rotate your shoulders completely back,” my teammate said. That indeed is what I did. I drudged up the fairway with the feeling of a wet towel on my shoulder. As I saw my yardage, I knew I needed to club down and let the ball roll up to the green. I chose a simple 9 iron from 118 yards to the middle of the green. My ball hit the front of the fringe, and had a slight roll inches from the green. I made my way toward the green with my teammate to decide my next stroke. “You’re sitting at a 42,” she said. I tried not to overcomplicate it, but I could not help from overthinking. I decided to putt from the fringe, leaving myself a ten or twelve foot putt for par. This was it. I looked at the hole from every angle, trying everything I could possibly attempt to get the ball to the hole in one stroke. I slowly moved my shoulders straight back and through to the hole, but missed the hole itself. I finished out the last putt and knew I accomplished a 45. All of the stress was released from my…

The wind was blowing in my face as I was getting ready to swing; I take the club back, swing with all my strength and abilities, and miss the tiny, dirt covered golf ball. I felt the cold stares on the back of my neck, and the silent giggles flowing down my back. As embarrassed and mortified as I was, I set myself up again to take another shot. “Focus,” I told myself, “Focus”. Slowly, moving the club back, I swing and hit the ball! Although it was only a couple of feet, my confidence rose making the next hit better than the first. We played 9 holes that day, and although we didn’t keep score, I’m almost certain I shot above 115, but I didn’t care. It’s easy to say that my golf skills were not up to par, but I chose to continue playing because I knew I could only…

I don’t think I had ever been so frustrated and annoyed in my life. I couldn’t believe what was taking place right in front of me. At the time I was unaware of the effect that it would have on me for years to come. My sophomore year in highschool, I was on the Cle Elum-Roslyn High School golf team. I had struggled all year long, staying after practice countless times so my coach, Wade, could teach me how to perfect my shot. Previously that season, I had gone to one tournament. I had one of the worst scores in the entire tournament. That day I felt like the team as a whole lost respect for me. I had to get that back.…
