Gone By Beneatha Essay

The poem, “Gone” represents the theme/idea that not all dreams come true because of the situation the primary speaker (Beneatha) is in. In the poem, Beneatha explains what made her want to become a doctor. “ I remember standing there thinking that was end. But the ambulance came, and they sewed it all up …. That was the most marvelous thing in the world . . . I wanted to do that.” Later in poem it is seen that Beneatha has given up on her dreams, “I wanted to cure. It used to matter. I used to care.” These quotes show a change from Beneath striving for her dream to her giving up on it. This change of attitude was caused by her brother who gave away the “money” which ruined her dreams. This is so, because becoming a doctor requires an expensive
education, even for the time period the poem is set in. Beneatha’s family doesn't have a lot of money to spare and after losing the money it is impossible for Beneatha to become a doctor. In the play, A Raisin in the Sun, the theme , not all dreams come true, is very apparent. Some of the main characters like Walter and Beneatha never achieved their dreams by the end of the play. This theme isn’t only seen in the play and the poem. It can be seen in the real world. One dream that people have is to become the president of the USA. However this dream is quickly crush because of its many requirements, expenses, and availability. This is only one of many dreams that don't come true everyday. Even the name of the poem supports the theme because it is a dream that is “Gone”.
