Introduction
What is pride? Is it the quality or state of being proud? Pride is an inwardly directed emotion that carries two common meaning with a negative connotation, pride refers to an inflated sense of one’s personal status or accomplishments. Positively pride refers to a satisfied sense and actions, or toward a whole group of people, and can be used to praise one’s self, or a feeling of gratification and belonging. There can be many different meanings of pride, it can be individually and also cultural and can be both good and bad. ‘Good pride’ represents our dignity and self-respect. ‘Bad pride’ is the deadly sin of superiority that shows ones personality of conceit
and arrogance. Pride is a double-edged sword emotion, on the one hand it can be honorable and good, and on the other it can be selfish and egoistical, it all depends on how you use this emotion.
Pride Pride can be allegiance towards a certain group such as the U.S. Armed Forces that is made up of the five armed service branches: Air force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps and Navy. In light the U.S. Marine Corps slogan ‘The few. The proud. The marines’. This slogan reflects the unique character of the Marines Corps and underscores the high caliber of those who join and serve their country as Marines. Why are Marines so proud? ‘The few, the proud’ who serve are not only part of one of the most effective fighting forces in history, but also one of the most storied organization in the world, they have a very proud history. They have always conducted themselves with great bravery, and possess a very proud culture. They go through a lot to earn their title and with that said proud. When pride takes control over a person’s choices, this may result to excessive pride, quality of having an excessively high opinion of oneself and the importance that has taken these qualities for granted and eventually create negative outcomes. Sometimes people become boastful, disrespectful, and prejudiced because the value of oneself as a high being than everybody else. This is sometimes seen in situations like the athletes who let success affect their performance because of excessive praise from fans. Athlete Lance Armstrong the seven-time Tour de France winner impressed many with his cycling performances, was using steroids fans were disappointed. He was banned form cycling, was stripped of all his Tour de France titles and lost countless endorsements. Conclusion There is nothing wrong with the positive feelings of pride associated with allegiance to a group you belong to or being an Athlete pursuing accomplishment and success. Marine’s takes pride in their branch of service and fight for their countries may be very patriotic. Athlete’s takes pride in their abilities to perform the sport they practice. Coaches reasonably take pride in their work ad successes. Parents understandably feel pride in performances and accomplishments of their children. The desire to obtain a sense of accomplishment and pride drives an individual towards excellence in sports, group affiliation and individual life.
