Goodbye Samuel Dialectical Journal
Title
"I take no joy in this, and I promise Emily will die quickly, and painlessly. Take comfort in that."
"One can only be so comforted with a gun pointed at his head, cabrón." wheezed Samuel. The man tilted his head at that. Very few who were unfortunate enough to cross paths with him spoke to him in such a matter, let alone were allowed the opportunity to speak at all.
"I would have assumed someone as difficult to track down as you would be more careful with his words."
"Would it make a difference?" The old man chuckled, a raspy sound that came with difficulty. Whether that struggle had arisen from older age or his present condition, one could not be quite sure.
"I suppose not. Goodbye, Samuel." There was a click as the gun's safety

For some, the pitter patter of rain was calming, for Emily it was maddening. It reminded her of the days leading up to her marriage to Samuel. She had only been fifteen, Samuel thirty-five. Her parents, knowing she had no interest in marrying Samuel and so considering her a flight risk, kept her cooped up until the marriage. Her family had been poor and so they believed marrying Samuel was the only chance Emily had at escaping that poverty. Those had been frightening days, stuck to her bedroom with only her thoughts and the drone of the rain to keep her company. At fifteen she was barely a teenager, and had never met Samuel and so did not know what to expect. She had heard stories however that terrified her, stories that kept her up at night. From seeing her father she knew what some men were capable of. She also was aware of the crimes Samuel had become involved in, which did nothing to enhance her expectations of him. What a relief it was then when Samuel turned out to be nothing less than a gentleman; he did not force her to do anything she didn't want to do, and initially left her to herself most of the time. It was quite clear she was more than just a trophy to him, and to some degree, Emily reciprocated those feelings. However, Emily had not loved Samuel; she had loved the stability and quality of life associated with him. Perhaps once it had been something more, but after fifteen years of marriage, …show more content…
I saw your car pull up to the driveway. To what do I owe the occasion? And little Camila, no less." Grinning ear to ear, Antonio ushered the two damp, shivering women into his home.
Feeling the warmth of the fireplace and the general feeling of safety that being around family can give a person, fatigue hit Emily like a bag of bricks. True, it had been only two hours since she had found out her husband had died. In that time however her mind had been running at a million miles per hour, deliberation upon deliberation passing through. She collapsed onto the nearest couch, Camila on her lap and already asleep once more.
"So… It's always a pleasure having you here but you have yet to answer my question." Said Antonio, sitting down on an aged loveseat facing them. For the first time since she arrived, he noticed the desperation displayed across his sister's face, and concern passed over him. "What's wrong?"
"I – Can I put Camila to bed, somewhere, before we speak? "
"Of course. She can have my bedroom for now." Antonio immediately gestured towards a room at the end of the hallway, shrouded in darkness. Willing herself upwards with her daughter nestled against her chest, Emily moved into Antonio's bedroom. It had stopped raining, and with her daughter so peacefully asleep, Emily felt the smallest inkling of hope that everything might be

The reader of “A Rose for Emily” might come to this conclusion because of the conditions Emily lived in as a Southern woman. Her father kept her isolated from the outside world and the young men who came to see her and this may have made her mentally ill. With the death of her father and the family being of wealth in the community, along with the views others had of Emily as having a “hereditary obligation” (Faulkner, 1930, p. 543) to continue the traditions that had been happening for generations, were hard for Miss Emily to continue because of her mental illness.…

Throughout this story, the overbearing presence of Emily Grierson's father is perhaps the greatest influence on her behavior. The story describes how Miss Emily's father rejected her suitors by standing in front of her and aggressively clutching a horsewhip whenever the young men came to call. Without her fathers influence and overprotective behavior it is likely that Emily would have made one of her suitors her husband when she was still of suitable marrying age for that time period.…
