Gotong-Royong-Model Answer (Experience at a Children’s Orphanage)
GOTONG-ROYONG-MODEL ANSWER
(EXPERIENCE AT A CHILDREN’S ORPHANAGE) Last Friday, the Interact Club made a visit to the Cherish Children’s Orphanage in conjunction with Hari Raya Puasa. A team of twenty students equipped with cleaning tools, presents, food and musical instruments made their way there. They arrived at about 9 o’ clock in the morning. Surveying the small, but cozy home, the students were divided into teams of five and got ready to work. I was on the clean-up team and we made beds. Some of us wiped the dusty windows and swept all the rubbish scattred under the beds. From where I stood, I peered outside at the gardening team. I could see they were hard at work. They were pulling out the pesky weeds and sweeping up dried leaves that the wind had blown into the compound. As I heart grunts and the dying sound of an engine, I looked to the far end of the garden, I saw one of my friends struggling with an out-of-date lawn mover. Chuckling to myself, I continued wiping the windows until the sheet of dust blocking the radiant sun rays had been cleaned. I admired my work from afar and the leader of my team gave me a nod of approval. While keeping the tools, the strumming of a guitar caught my attention and I hurried out to the sitting area. The entertainment team had set up their musical instruments and had started singing a catchy tune. The children there laughed, clapped and sang alone. It touched my heart. I frowned when I thought of the heartless people who had brought them into the world and left them here. Sadly, I brushed off that thought. I started helping to prepare the food we had brought for them. I heard giggling and curiosity got the better of me, so I looked over my shoulders. Some girls in the entertainment team were giving the children manicures and doing up their hair. A lot of them looked very happy and the look on their faces was one of joy. As we served the children food, I took a quick glance at my watch. The activities

The air is tainted with unnatural fumes of grease, wood, and burnt electrical tape. Oil slicks stain the floor. Thick wooden shelves sag unnervingly close to buckling under the weight of old house paint and power tools. A workbench lies buried beneath papers, rulers, cans, and metal shards. An uncomfortable growl pours from the water heater. Most people wouldn’t describe my grimy garage as pleasant, but I love spending my free time here. My mother and father trudged from the well to the chickens, the well to the calf pasture, the well to the barn, and from the well to the garden. The sun came out hot and bright, endlessly, day after day. The crops shrivelled and died. They harvested half the corn, and ground the other half, stalks and all, and fed it to the cattle as fodder. With the price at four cents a bushel for the harvested crop, they couldn’t afford to haul it into town. They burned it in the furnace for fuel that winter.…

Children had to go to school with a mask on their face and a scarf or homemade rag to cover their mouths from dirt entering in. Everyone’s houses were being filled with dirt, from the hard floors to the kitchen table were you had your three meals served. Ken Burns stated that the only place that was clean was the shape of your head on the pillow from sleeping on top of it. According to the article “Legacy” on PBS, “Huge drifts of dirt buried pastures and barnyards, piled up in front of homesteaders' doors, came in through window cracks and sifted down from ceilings.” No matter how hard you tried to cover up your home the dirt would always try to find a way in. There were many but few that were found to interview about the experience they went through when the dust storms took over their town. Lawrence Svobida was one of the few that experienced this storm and he said, “I came to Meade County, Kansas fired with ambition to become a wheat farmer. Harvesting wheat was a thrill to me. The roar of the laboring motors and the whine of the combine was music to my ears. It was breath-taking — hundreds of acres of wheat that were mine. To me it was the most beautiful scene in all the world.” Svobida loved the job he had but it wasn’t quick before the storm took over and stole something from him that he loved to do. Fern Behrendt was another person that…

They said that they appreciated our kindness and wanted us to have a great Christmas and New Year. The couple went ahead and ate their meal, and after twenty minutes, they came back and thanked us again for the meal saying that it was delicious and tasted like home. The couple’s demeanor mirrored the demeanor of the other guests, and I was just going to lump their compliments with the others and continue thinking about what I have planned for the rest of the day, but after learning more about the couple’s reasons for being in the house, we all came to understand how special that compliment…

I noticed how abandoned the farm was. It needs much work. Jake told me about his parent’s death. And how now I am the only family he has. I knew what I had to do. Jake was responsible for the outside and I had to tend to the house. We unloaded the wagon and walked up to the house. It was way bigger then my parent’s home. This house can have fit three of them inside of it. Jake told me it was built in the finest wood that was available in his town. When the doors and windows were open the house came to life. Dust flew with the gust of wind that came in. As a married lady I was the woman of my own house now. It’s my job to make this home for my husband and me. Jake went out to tend to the yards and animals. And I started repairing the house. I like candles in the rooms to burn most of the dust smell. The sun just wasn’t doing its job today. I heated water in a pan to scrub the walls and floors. After all the dust was gone, I heated more water and gathered all the fabrics to clean them. When I was hanging the fabrics on the line I watch Jake feed the horses he looked so busy. Once the house was done I went out to his mothers garden. It needed much help also. I gathered all the vegetables that were ready. Pulled up the weeds that have grown over the time it was not tended to. Golfers poked their heads out, curious with whom was out in their garden. I was on edge, I was afraid of snakes and if there were weeds mice and golfers there…

Drenched in sweat and trying to avoid touching anything made of metal, I stood in the back of the dump truck shoveling mulch into a wheelbarrow. The temperature outside was in the upper nineties reaching for triple digits. I could see heat waves coming off of the scorched ground, but I didn’t have time to pay attention to any of that. We had a task to finish and we would see to it no matter what obstacles mother nature or life in general would throw our way. This is the mentality that working in landscaping every summer throughout high school taught me.…

Feeding the redneck’s different farm animals in the barn was a lot more palatable to the younger man then the daily mucking out of their stalls. But, he had to do it. He had to get in good with the redneck. The younger man thought and planned constantly as he wheel-barrowed the day’s shit back and forth, to the larger compost pile, that the redneck had made by the side of the barn, away from being downwind.…
