(EXPERIENCE AT A CHILDREN’S ORPHANAGE) Last Friday, the Interact Club made a visit to the Cherish Children’s Orphanage in conjunction with Hari Raya Puasa. A team of twenty students equipped with cleaning tools, presents, food and musical instruments made their way there. They arrived at about 9 o’ clock in the morning. Surveying the small, but cozy home, the students were divided into teams of five and got ready to work. I was on the clean-up team and we made beds. Some of us wiped the dusty windows and swept all the rubbish scattred under the beds. From where I stood, I peered outside at the gardening team. I could see they were hard at work. They were pulling out the pesky weeds and sweeping up dried leaves that the wind had blown into the compound. As I heart grunts and the dying sound of an engine, I looked to the far end of the garden, I saw one of my friends struggling with an out-of-date lawn mover. Chuckling to myself, I continued wiping the windows until the sheet of dust blocking the radiant sun rays had been cleaned. I admired my work from afar and the leader of my team gave me a nod of approval. While keeping the tools, the strumming of a guitar caught my attention and I hurried out to the sitting area. The entertainment team had set up their musical instruments and had started singing a catchy tune. The children there laughed, clapped and sang alone. It touched my heart. I frowned when I thought of the heartless people who had brought them into the world and left them here. Sadly, I brushed off that thought. I started helping to prepare the food we had brought for them. I heard giggling and curiosity got the better of me, so I looked over my shoulders. Some girls in the entertainment team were giving the children manicures and doing up their hair. A lot of them looked very happy and the look on their faces was one of joy. As we served the children food, I took a quick glance at my watch. The activities
