Grameenphone

Grameenphone is a widely known as GP, is the leading telecommunications service provider in Bangladesh. Grameenphone is the largest cellular operator in the country. It is a joint venture enterprise between Telenor and Grameen Telecom Corporation, a non-profit sister concern of the internationally acclaimed microfinance organization and community development bank Grameen Bank. Grameenphone was the first company to introduce GSM technology in Bangladesh. It also established the first 24-hour Call Centre to support its subscribers. With the slogan Stay Close, stated goal of Grameenphone is to provide affordable telephony to the entire population of Bangladesh.

The idea of providing universal mobile phone access throughout Bangladesh, including its rural areas, was originally conceived by Iqbal Quadir, who is currently the founder and director of the Legatum Centre for Development and Entrepreneurship at MIT. He was inspired by the Grameen Bank microcredit model and envisioned a business model where a cell phone can serve as a source of income. After leaving his job as an investment banker in the United States, Quadir travelled back to Bangladesh, after meeting and successfully raising money from New York based investor and philanthropist Joshua Mailman, and worked for three years gaining support from various organizations including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad of Grameen Bank and the Norwegian telephone company, Telenor. He was finally successful in forming a consortium with Telenor and Grameen Bank to establish Grameenphone.

Have you ever thought about how difficult it is for a baby to be born without low birth weight, prematurity, or birth defects? After visiting the March of Dimes website I learned that over 460,000 newborns in the United States alone are born prematurely. I am a parent of a premature infant and I know firsthand how hard it is to get find answers and get assistance for a disabled child. I gave birth to my son at only 23 weeks of gestation. He was severely underdeveloped and required many surgeries. With the assistance of supportive organizations and medical research, the lifesaving surgeries were performed immediately. Afterwards I researched to find out just what organizations helped to fund the research needed for the surgery my child had undergone. I found that the March of Dimes, Mother’s March and WalkAmerica were just three of the well-known organizations in the United States, and around the world, that funded such research. Each of these organizations main focus is putting an end to prematurity and each work to make their name known through their individual websites.…

Of the 2.7 million Americans who benefit from Planned Parenthood, a large majority come from low-income families or neighborhoods; consequently, over half of PPFA clinics are located in underrepresented sectors in order to cater to the needs of the impoverished and marginalized (Mitts & Attanasio). This accessibility is especially important in a time when the chief support of health care, hospitals and family doctors, are increasingly moving away from poorer areas, where the most needy often live. Planned Parenthood ventures to eliminate the apparent correlation between affluence and health through targeting low-income areas. Of those benefiting from PPFA, CNN Correspondents Goldshmidt and Strickland wrote, “Nearly 80% had incomes at or below 150% of the federal poverty level”, as cited in a March Government Accountability Office Report (Goldshmidt & Strickland). Those poverty-stricken and unable to afford health insurance are still able to receive services from Planned Parenthood at severely reduced prices based on income level and determined by Title X’s sliding discount fee scale. Title X is the only government-funded grant program dedicated strictly to family planning and reproductive health services for low-income and uninsured patients, and it allocates a quarter of its funding to Planned…

He chose the Elmira community to test his model as the community had a high unemployment rate, one of the highest rates of infant mortality, though on a decline (Infant mortality rate of 20/1000 prior to 1974, and 15.8/1000 afterwards), premature births and consistently had the highest rates of child abuse and neglect in the state (D. L. Olds, Henderson Jr, et al., 1986). He subsequently tested the program over the next three decades through the use of randomized clinical trials (RCTs), first in Elmira, New York, in 1977; then Memphis, Tennessee, in 1988; and Denver, Colorado, in 1994 using different populations; White, Black and Hispanic populations respectively (Olds, 2007). The use of these trials and subsequent follow-up studies over the years helped in comparison of outcomes (both short and long term) between mothers and children enrolled in the program, to a control group not enrolled in the program. This tested the effectiveness of the program on maternal health and child health and development which showed that the program produced sizeable and sustainable results: improved pregnancy outcomes, child health and development, and maternal life course ( Olds, 2007). After proven effectiveness, through a collaboration between public and private ventures, the program began replication in 1996 by extending to other counties and states and replicated similar results. In 2003, Nurse-Family Partnership National Service Office (NFP NSO) was established to facilitate replication across the U.S and to provide implementation agencies with the necessary support. There has been (and still is) about 14 follow-up studies since implementation which aid in tracking and evaluating participants’ outcomes (NFP,…
