The Great Awakening
In the 1720’s there was an event that historians refer to as the Great Awakening. The Great Awakening consisted of the thirteen colonies. The Great Awakening was started because the church lost spiritual interest, the church hired unsaved ministers, and people were becoming greedy, and wanted worldly entertainment. However there were some men who resisted the foul ways of the world, and became the only lights in a dark world. Some of the men who influenced the Great Awakening were Jonathan Edwards, Gilbert Tennent, and George Whitefield. Jonathan Edwards was born October 5th, 1703, and died when he was 55 on March 22nd, 1758. Edwards was a Christian preacher, philosopher, and theologian. Gilbert Tennent was born February 5th, 1703 and died when he was 51 on July 23rd, 1764. He called the unsaved preachers “Pharisee-Preachers” George Whitefield was born December 27th, 1714 and died when he was 56 on September 20th, 1770. Whitefield was a preacher who was one of the founders of Methodism. These men were some of the few God-loving preachers left in the thirteen colonies. To sum it all up, Edwards, Tennent, and Whitefield were some of the few people to preach, and help out during the Great Awakening, and America will forever look up to these men. If it weren’t for these men America would be a lot worse than it is today. However, the Great Awakenings didn’t last as long as we needed it to, with how horrible the world is right now, we need another Great Awakening more than ever. Hopefully God will raise up men like Edwards, Tennent, and Whitefield who follow after Gods own heart and not his own.
