Change is the process of becoming different. This means that it is a multistep process, but all processes have one root. The process of change stems from an overall unsatisfactory view of life. Change can only occur when the person wants to take part in the process of change. Without the will, the person cannot successfully change their persona. An unsatisfactory view of life is caused by the realization of not being able to attain one’s goal. When people realize they are unable to attain their goal, changes occurs.
People change when they are unable to attain their goal because they want to distance themselves from their past failures. In Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson, Ishmael Chambers, a reporter and former childhood lover of the wife of the defendant, has acquired a piece of evidence that could change the outcome of the trial completely. Ishmael is at loss as to whether he should bring forward the evidence as seen in the quote “The truth now lay in Ishmael’s own pocket and he did not know what to do with it” (Guterson 428). Ishmael, in the end, presented the evidence to the judge and Kabuo, the defendant, was cleared of charges. By presenting the evidence, Ishmael shows his willingness to change. The only reason that he considered not giving up the evidence was because of his past relationship with Hatsue, Kabuo’s wife. Ishmael realized that he would never be able to win her back, causing him to want to change. Because of this Ishmael let go of Hatsue. The only way people will let go of a past goal is if they are personally motivated to do so. This causes the person to change.
