Great Expectations: Joe Gargery
In the movie Great Expectations, there are many positive characters but one who really stands out to me is Joe Gargery. Joe is a very hardworking man who provides for his wife and Pip. Even though Joe is not Pips father, he is the only fatherly figure Pip has ever known. Joe is a blacksmith and he teaches Pip how to be a blacksmith because one day he is expected to do the same. Joe Gargery is a positive light in the movie because the actions he has chosen to do. Joe did not have to step up to be Pip’s father but he did. Joe’s wife treats Joe and Pip very badly because she does not want to take care of Joe so she does not want to take care of Pip. Growing up Pip thought the world of Joe but after Pip left, Joe had no one because his wife had

Another positive action Joe has done is giving money to Pip when he has no money to pay his bills. Joe had sent the money needed to pay his debt off out of the goodness of his heart. Paying off Pips bills left Pip in shock because earlier in the movie Pip thought Joe did not have any money at all and considered him as an embarrassment. Joe thought of Pip as his own son so he did not leave him to go without anything. The goodness of Joe is centered on Pip and his wellbeing. When Joe met Biddy, is another positive thing in Joe’s life. After his wife died and Pip left for London Joe was all by himself. Biddy and Joe became so close they were going to get married. The announcement was odd to Pip because he had come back for Biddy. Joe had finally found happiness and a true loving relationship again. Great Expectations has many wonderful characters other than Joe but by far, he is the one who seems to see the best in everything and who cares. When Pip had no money, he sent money for Pips debt. After his wife died, Joe found an even stronger love with Biddy. Joe and his wife took Pip in when he was younger and acted as his parents. Joe may not have had everything in life he wanted but he showed everyone it is not the things you have, it is the people you have around you is what matters the most.
