The American Dream is generally defined to achieve a better way of living. Fitzgerald shows what a person may go through to achieve his or her American dream. In the book the character Gatsby strives to make the American dream his reality made him into shell of a man, full of corruption rather than happiness.
Gatsby is blinded by money and can’t see that you can’t buy happiness or love. In the book Gatsby American Dream is symbolized by the green light on the docks. “Gatsby Believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us.” While reading the book we discover that Gatsby had an affair with daisy and his American Dream eventually ended up for him to be with daisy. To be with daisy Gatsby had worked hard to impress her by redefining himself with wealth, and is known to as “self made” man. His wealth not only redefined him but tainted his beliefs. Gatsby tries to get his happiness from others by sharing it with others at his parties.
Gatsby lives his life with dishonestly. Since Gatsby had the desire to be with Daisy it does not matter to him care how he gets to his goal weather he taking the high road or low road. "I found out what your 'drug-stores' were." He turned to us and spoke rapidly. "He and this Wolfsheim bought up a lot of side-street drug-stores here and in Chicago and sold grain alcohol over the counter. That's one of his little stunts. I picked him for a bootlegger the first time I saw him, and I wasn't far wrong." Tom discovers that Gatsby has been selling alcohol in his drug stores illegally. Gatsby has a crime filled life and he hides it in secret. People often talk about Gatsby in a bad perspective because he mostly lies about who he is. One would say that Gatsby doesn’t know himself anymore, he’s dishonest about himself. Gatsby is willing to be change himself so he could reach his dream to be with daisy.
