Although the grandmother considers herself to be a good person she often appears to be very judgmental and self centered. “’The grandmother said she would have done well to have marry Mr. Teagarden because he was a gentleman and had bought Coca-Cola stock when it first came out and that he had died only a few years ago, a very wealthy man’”, which seems like she only wanted to marry him for his money (457). While passing through the family stops at “The Tower” for lunch and the grandmother describes the owner Sammy as being a “good man” giving us a look at what she consider a “good man” to be (458). After leaving the grandmother suggest that they go visit a plantation house; however, after awhile she becomes so shocked by a terrible thought that she flings the cat at Bailey, who is driving, which causes an accident. The character in this story, Sister, seems to be in a way jealous and a little selfish, but with good reason, she has a sister, Stella-rondo, who has always been everyone's favorite and everyone would believe everything she said, from her saying that Sister was "one-sided to her,( Stella-Rondos ) "adopted" child. Sister has every reason to not like Stella-Rondo. Everyone else in the house seems to think that Sister is indeed very jealous of Stella-Rondo, and Sister can not even defend herself because that would have just verified everyone's point. For one, the grandmother can be quite manipulative. Because she wants to visit her family in Tennessee instead of vacationing in Florida, she attempts to scare the family away from Florida by “ warning “ her son about the escaped Misfit who killed multiple people. Once she was able to coax her family into going to Tennessee, she traps them into visiting a house in Georgia by revealing to the children that the house contained a secret panel. She even attempts to deceive the Misfit and pays little to no attention to her family, so she could save her own life. The grandmother insists on dressing and acting like a lady to hide the fact that she is “ common blood “ The Misfit also has some deep rooted issues. The story states “ "Turn to the left, it was a wall. Look up it was a ceiling, look down it was a floor. I forget what I done, lady. I set there and set there, trying to remember what it was I done and I ain't recalled it to this day." ( O’Connor 9 ). The Misfit was once buried alive, which does a lot to someone’s mind and soul. The Misfit explains how he kills people and commits crime due to the fact that Jesus did raise the dead, and he has to reason to follow him, only to commit crimes out of pure meanness. Both the grandmother and the Misfit are alike, which the grandmother…

Even though the Grandmother shows to be a victim of rudeness, hostile statements, and dangerous situations, she still stood by her morals regardless of the situations. In the first paragraph, the grandmother is a victim of her grandchildren and at the end, she is a victim of a murderer who ironically is much nicer to her than her own grandchildren! It is easily observed that the grandmother's morals involve making her environment as pleasant as her personality. At the beginning, you can see how the grandchildren are making hostile comments towards the grandmother about going on the trip with them. As she sits in the back seat with the hostile children instead of allowing them to ruin her mood, she decides to point out the " interesting details of the scenery- stone mountain's; the blue granite, the brilliant red clay banks slightly streaked with purple"…. (pg 199). At the end while a victim of a murderer the grandmother still tried to make some good out of the situation. "Ain't a cloud in the sky" he remarked. "Yes it is a beautiful day" said the grandmother.…

The grandmother continues to pop of the page this time with the use of direct characterization. Flannery O’Connor describes the grandmother perfectly, and it really gives the audience her sense of style and also how she feels about herself in comparison to others. O’Connor says “The children’s mother still had on slack and still had her head tied up in a green kerchief, but the grandmother had on a navy blue straw sailor hat with a bunch of white violets on the brim and a navy blue dress with a small dot in the print” (O’Connor 2). In this use of direct characterization the grandmother is being portrayed as a woman who is always comparing herself to other people. She needs everyone to know that she is a proper lady, and dresses better than her daughter-in-law. Another example of the grandmother direct characterization is her use of racial slurs. O’Connor puts her use of racial slurs into this short story because she wants everyone to know how she grew up, and in what time period she was raised in. These racial slurs gives the audience a better understanding of the…
