From our vantage point in the present, historical events sometimes seem almost inevitable. Because we know "how the story ends," we assume that the course of history was somehow determined, almost fated. But this is not true. Events and human decisions in the past shaped history just as the events and decisions of our time will affect our future.…

History is a chronological record of events that have come to pass. For many of us the study of history and how individuals managed to live their lives in the old days has become unimaginable, especially in today’s technologically advanced society. It’s comical to witness the younger generation display a sense of awe at events that you and I experienced as normal everyday events, such things as turning the television channels manually, or making a phone call by using a pay phone, or even writing a letter to a love one and waiting up to a couple of weeks for a response. These insignificant events may not mean much to the new generations, but it means a lot to…

"Everyone has a moment in history which belongs particularly to him. It is the moment when his emotions achieve their most powerful sway over him, and afterward when you say to this person " the world today" or "life" or "reality" he will assume that you mean this moment, even if it is fifty years past. The world, through his unleashed emotions, imprinted itself upon him and he carries the stamp of that passing moment forever." (Knowles, 32)…

The title of this poem identifies time and place precisely and this presents a strong image. The poem depicts a group of immigrants waiting to depart on a train and start another physical journey. Central Station is the hub of Sydney railway network especially in 1951 since travel by plane and car was rare and the station was overcrowded with commuters. The interval in the physical journey of the train and the waiting at the station reflects the composer’s apprehension and curiosity towards the impending physical journey where the destination is unknown.…

Peter N. Sterns' points and ideas were very logical, and I am confident in saying that I agree with all of them. This particular prompt reminds me of the statement "one who does not know history is doomed to repeat it", just as Mark Twain famously said, "History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme." Just as couples who do know learn from their fights break up - if you do not learn history, you will never be able to grow, and expand your knowledge. Consequently, if you do not know your history, how do you expect to escape the mistakes others have made and laid out for you?…

First of all, something that makes the Pyrenees Mountain Range so fascinating is the rich history that lies in its peaks. Even though that most of the mountain passes were high and difficult, medieval pilgrims and even invading armies and barbarian hordes would persevere and cross over the mountain. The were actually numerous amounts of pilgrims, trekking across the range while on their way to Santiago de Compostela (Pyrenees). Fast forward a couple hundred years to 1903 when the organizers of the Tour de France, which is essentially a bike race taken place mostly in France, added the Pyrenees mountains to their tour. Most of the riders that were able to finish the range said that it was probably the hardest part of the entire tour (Tour de France in Pyrenees). Another thing that you may find interesting to this mountain range is the fact that the Pyrenees lies in both france and Spain. There are six spanish provinces that are in the Pyrenees as well as parts of six French departments (Pyrenees). The Pyrenees has a history that is pretty unique to its parts.…

According to Maya Angelou, “History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again.” This quote implies that history is permanent and it is simply impossible for one to change the past. As humans we make bad choices that we have to live with that can potentially haunt us later in life. The only way to change this reality is to foster a brave outlook on life. With a little courage and a clear conscience, one can make a better decision next time one faces that a similar obstacle. This quote proves to be valid in numerous ways. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is great example of this critical lens. The novel illustrates the quotation well. It presents a main character named Amir that experiences something awful, and makes a decision that will affect his life forever.…
