This story follows a father that is consumed by greed, but is indubitably blind-sighted that he wishes away his life. A man with a prominent gray beard walks in on the scattered chess pieces on the table, which could easily be deciphered whether the white or black won the game. Mr. White welcomes Sergeant to their humble home for a chat to catch up on their complicated lives. Sergeant tells about his travels, where he found a ‘treasure’ called a monkey’s paw. He tells its treacherous backstory with the souls it once served, and granted terrible wishes for. The rules of the monkey’s paw is that you are granted 3 wishes of anything you could ever want, however all magic comes with a price. Mr. White who is too focused on the promise this item has is blinded that the fact that it has lead to the end of a lot of people. He asks Sergeant if he can take the paw, which Sergeant replies with a strict warning. Mr. White blatantly ignores Sergeant-major Morris’s warning, and takes the monkey's paw. Later that evening Mr. White realizes that in order complete the mortgage on the house is 200 pounds. He wishes for 200 pounds that night, then the paw moved in his hands. The next day his son went to work as usual, and Mr. White did what he usually did in the evening.
