In the sentence “I forgot to say he thinks he's going to be manager some sunny day, maybe in 1990 when it's called the Great Alexandrov and Petrooshki Tea Company or something” (Updike, A&P). In this example “Great Alexandrov”, and “Petrooshki Tea Company” are both proper nouns because they name wither a location, or a person; in this case these are proper nouns because they are names of a location. As previously mentioned, nouns can either be singular, or plural. Singular nouns are nouns in which only one, single object is being presented, while plural nouns present two or more objects .In the sentence “He pointed, they pointed, and they shuffled out of sight behind a pyramid of Diet Delight peaches” (Updike, A&P), “Dirty Delight peaches” the word peaches functions as a plural noun, while as previously discussed “Dirty Delight peaches” would function as a proper noun as it reflects a brand…

Hospitality is extremely important in Homer's "Odyssey." The higher a society's level of hospitality, the more civilized that society is. Some specific examples of hospitality in "The Odyssey" are: Telemakhos's treatment upon his arrival in Nestor, Odysseus's treatment of Polyphemus, Penelope's treatment of her suitors, and the slaying of those suitors by Odysseus. The Greek belief concerning the origin of the concept of hospitality, often called Xenia, is reflected at the end of "The Odyssey."…

Storytelling is a way to explain the unknown, provide moral and ethical guidelines, and put good and bad human interactions into context for children. With the gods, heroines, and villains in Greek Mythology, children can be taught about values, courage, treachery, weakness, and the flaws of human nature. While the myths of the Greek gods are centered in the religion and culture of the ancient times, the stories continue to be parables to teach and entertain children today. The mystery and supernatural fears of ancient Greece have been overtaken by modern times, but the fundamentals of human nature remain unchanged and create opportunities to teach in a way that captures the imaginary…

"The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature," (Anne Frank, 5). In times of despondency and even contentment, people look towards the gods for counsel. They set the guiding principles for human subsistence. People worship these ideal beings throughout all circumstances. They pray to give thanks for good fortune, to ask for forgiveness, to be blessed, and more often than not, to obtain security. For a bounteous measure of people, the ultimate purpose in life is to be the most preeminent person you can…

    Essay On Greek Myths

“The characters, stories, themes and lessons of Greek mythology have shaped art and literature for thousands of years. They appear in Renaissance paintings such as Botticelli’s Birth of Venus and Raphael’s Triumph of Galatea and writings like Dante’s Inferno; Romantic poetry and libretti; and scores of more recent novels, plays and films.” I think that it is great that the ancient Greeks came up with these myths. When I first started reading and listening about the Greek myths, I thought they were totally absurd. However, I now think that some myths tell entertaining stories and teach great lessons. Through this paper I will tell you about one of the myths we share today in our culture, share what Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung had to say about mythic structures of the human psyche, and explain why myths such as these bring us together socially and culturally. The gods in Greek myths can be divided into respective categories where the first three of them are the Olympian gods, Titan gods and primeval gods. The Greeks believed in one God for every aspect of life. When a mysterious activity would occur and there was no logical reason for it the Greeks would always create a myth. Myths were not only told to explain the unexplainable, they were also told to teach us lessons and explain the Greeks cultural and religious practices. These myths included all the Greeks different Gods and what their task was in this world. Including, Zeus the God of lightening, Helios the God who pulled the sun across the sky with a chariot. For my DIY course, I had researched mythology, mainly Greek mythology though. So in the beginning of Greek mythology, the first gods were Gaea, the Earth and Uranus, the Sky and Heavens. Some stories say that Gaea had made Uranus. Together they had twelve children in all and they were known as the first generation of Titans. Six of them were females and their names were Mnemosyne, Phoebe, Rhea, Theia, Themis and Tethys. The six males were named Coeus, Cronus, Crius, Hyperion, Iapetus, and Oceanus. The Titans arose to power when Cronus, his mother, Gaea, and his brothers made a plan to take the rulership of the Cosmos from their father, Uranus, resulting with Cronus who the youngest brother to be in control.…
