Green Day Minority - Power
English Assignment – Written Text
Green Day - minority
The Song ‘Minority’ is written and performed by Green Day which consists of four band members, Billie Joe Armstrong (Lead singer/Guitar), Mike Dirnt (Bass/Backup vocals), Tre Cool (Drums) and Jason White (Backup guitar/backup vocals). It was released on the album ‘Warning’ from the record label ‘Reprise Records’ on October 3rd 2000.
Minority is all about standing up for what you believe in and not letting people push you around or tell you what to do. This is emphasised in the opening lyrics saying “I want to be the minority. I don’t need your authority. Down with the moral majority. ‘Cause I want to be the minority.” These lyrics are the chorus to the song and repeat four times to really get the point across. Already in the opening lines you can feel the power behind the lyrics and can tell that they want to stand out and not blend in with the crowd.
The verses in between the chorus’ are all about being yourself and saying who cares what everyone else does just be yourself. Although the whole song is powerful three parts really stand out. The first is “Stepped out of the line, like a sheep runs from the herd.” This is basically saying that although it is uncommon for a sheep to run away from its herd or in this case people to leave behind what others are doing and do their own thing and stand up for what they believe in, it does happen and they are being that lone sheep and leaving ‘the herd’ to do whatever they want, whenever they want and you can too. The second is extremely meaningful, it goes “One light, one mind, flashing in the dark, blinded by the silence of a thousand broken hearts.” This means that while some people do stand up against everyone else a lot of the time they are quickly ‘blinded’ by what everyone else is doing and forget what they were standing up for in the first place. The final part that sticks out to me is “For crying out loud, she screams unto me. A free for all, fuck ‘em all,

At first I thought that the music was not in tandem with these lyrics at all. The lyrics have such depression in them at first while the music itself is so peppy and upbeat. I could not understand how they worked together. That for me was the site of struggle. Hegemonic norms tell us that songs about death and sadness should be slow and heavy. This song has such energy to it and resists hegemonic norms so that it couldn’t possibly fall into the category of death. I listened to the song a few more times and I realized that the song was not just a sad retelling of a story, but it is a memorial of…

The speaker in the poem is currently at a crossroads in life where there is opportunity to act upon their ambitions. Yet before they can make a change there is an “old tug at your [their] ankles” forcing other people’s “bad advice” into their conscious (8-9). The “bad advice” coming to life and grasping the speaker physically creates an emphasis in the emotional impact a decision can have on a person. By personifying the advice, attention is being drawn to the obligation to conform to the general consensus or opinion of peers. Throughout the poem there is a conflict between following heart or society but the speaker suggests that the audience in the end is only “determined to save the only life you [they] could” (lines 35-36). Indirectly proposing an idea to infer that the only guaranteed life a person can save is their own connects to the ethos appeal. The audience can identify with this claim and take it in their own perspective to connect with personal experiences. This paints a bigger picture because by one saving them it shows priorities and valuing your own life over others. By choosing to help yourself, one becomes more self aware, kind and resourceful to others who are also figure out where they are going in their journey. [closing…

The song starts out with a strang questioning of reality: “Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide, No escape from reality, Open your eyes, look up to the skies and see”. They first two lines are rhetorical questions. They help establish the state of mind needed in order to continue with the song. The third line is a metaphor. It means everything is crashing down on him, and he cannot escape it. It seems to conclude that he is caught between a dream and awakening. The next couple set of lines are being used as transitions into the main part of stanza one, “I’m just a poor boy, I need no sympathy, Because I’m easy come, easy go, Little high, little low, Any way the wind blows, Doesn’t really matter to me, to me”. In the third and fourth line repetition is used in order to keep the lyrics flowing. The boy thinks his life doesn’t matter to anyone, his life is meaningless and the Earth does not care what happens to him. He does not care what happens next, he just wants it over; “any way the wind blows” him, he will go and it “doesn’t really matter” to him anymore. The next three lines show intent to kill by the boy, “Mama, just killed a man, Put a gun against his head, Pulled my trigger, now he’s dead”. The boy has finally come to terms of what he has…

A minority is any category of people distinguished by physical or cultural difference that a society sets apart and subordinates (Macionis, 2006). It can be based on race, ethnicity, or both (Macionis, 2006). There are two important characteristics of a minority: The first thing is that they share a distinct identity, which may be based on physical or cultural traits and the second is that Minorities experience subordination (Macionis, 2006). Minorities in the United States typically have a lower income, lower occupational prestige, and limited schooling (Macionis, 2006). Do not think that being a minority is always a disadvantage though, there are some members of minority groups who do much better than others, but even though they do pretty well they cannot escape the classification of being a minority.…

The song is about how any government in any country would much rather kill there own people and race then spend the money on food and things that will preserve it. This song also explains how greedy the government and the world can really be, “ ever time you drop the boom you kill the god your child has born” I think this means all life is important and anyone including the children can change or have a huge impact on the world. The song also means that if we spend money on life instead of death the world would be a better place and there wouldn’t be any more wars, death for no reason or fighting.…

In addition, I liked how the song ended with a beggar and a pretty lady. Although I don’t really see how it ties in with the rest of the song lyrics, I still enjoyed the message of this verse. I believe it is trying to say that when we don’t have anything we realize that we don’t need that much in life. But when we have everything, we always have the urge to ask for more. This really relates to my everyday life. My family and I have always lived a luxurious life from being able to afford all the necessities for life. We ended up asking for more and more because we loved the feeling of getting new things. This resulted in a lack ofappreciation for things in life. On the other hand, when my grandparents were small, they were very poor and couldn’t afford many things in life; therefore, they…

Blink 182 was comprised of guitarist-vocalist Tom DeLonge, bassist-vocalist Mark Hoppus, and drummer Travis Barker. The band started in San Diego, California while the band members were still in high school. They “first found an audience with the extreme sport crowd and the suburban youth of the United States” (Hightower). The band most likely gained such a big following because they didn’t think it was necessary to write songs…

It is about two people who have a lot in common but are too afraid to show their true colors. They looked for other people that were like them and they finally passed by each other and never knew that they were exactly alike. They were not being true to themselves therefore they missed out on an amazing encounter. The message I received from this poem is to always be true to yourself; never try and be someone else because you are unique and there are people who are looking for your unique personality. By being yourself you can be truly happy and find the people that are meant to be in your…

Minority groups are subordinate groups in our society that have less control over their lives than do members of a majority or dominant group. Expectations of success, wealth and happiness are narrowed in society as a member of a minority group. By contrast, being in a majority group does not guarantee automatic possession of these ideals either.…

The Red Hot Chili Peppers song The Power of Equality expresses the topic of discrimination and equality. Throughout the song the band speaks of how people should be equal no matter what their race, religion, or gender may be and how it is wrong to discriminate someone based off of their differences. This relates to the Equal Rights Movement when people were wanting the same rights as those around them no matter what the cost was. We choose this song due to its relation to the Equal Rights Movement and how well it connected to the topic.…
