Green Power Reading Response Essay
As the year 2013 is gradually coming to a close, global warming and pollution is not. Glaciers are becoming smaller, the ozone is becoming thinner, and the air pollution levels are at an all time high. How is the earth heading downhill in such a fast manner? Who is to blame? Is there ever going to be a resolution? California Governor Jerry Brown stated, “Our wealth, our society, our being is driven by oil and carbon. And when we say we have to make a shift, that is extremely difficult.” He is completely correct. Parents, children, cousins, co-workers, friends, and nearly everyone able to grasp the concept of global warming and the danger the earth is in are all wondering what is going to happen to the environment in the upcoming years. As he stood on a steep ridge some 19,000 feet high, David Braeshears was able to distinctly see the Rongbuk Glacier in Tibet. He was in dismay with the sight of the glacier’s major change from a picture he had seen from 1921. “The glacier’s just gone,” he said. The obvious difference from 1921 to the day he stood on the Himalayan outcrop in 2006, was appalling. 40 percent of the glacier had melted away in the eight-five year difference. Green house gasses are to blame for the intense climate change. Carbon dioxide, methane, and ozone gasses are the prime factors in this dramatic earth change. The burning of caol and oil are the cause of the outrageous fossil fuels that are destroying the ozone. Majority of the world relies on electricity to survive. Over 50 percent of electricity produced in the world comes from the burning of coal. The average American uses enough electricity, annually, to burn over 9 tons of coal. Along with the burning of coal, gasoline is another highly used resource when it comes to every day living. Car manufacturers are taking the necessary steps in producing vehicles that do not run on gasoline. Hybrid and all electric cars have been created in hopes of decreasing the gas consumption. Personally, my car holds 20 gallons of gas. A tank of gas lasts me roughly two weeks. With that being said, I use AT LEAST 40 gallons of gas per month, equalling out to over 480 gallons per year. And that is only my car. Imagine every single person using the same amount of gas as me, if not more. The number of gallons of gas used by the world in a year is outrageous. Every single person is virtually contributing to global warming by the insane amount of gas we use. Unfortunately, that is not the only problem we have! Far more issues have risen than just the gas consumption by vehicles. Numbers calculated in 2011 say that under 15 percent of energy produced was created by renewable resources and 62 percent of energy was produced by fossil fuels and coal. These numbers are far too low and high to guarantee a healthy environment in the upcoming years. If all states would have someone like Texas oilman T. Boone Pickens or California governor Jerry Brown, the United States would be on the right track in slowing down global warming. Boone released a campaign saying that he wanted to create the worlds largest wind farm which would provide energy for millions of homes. However, due to reasons such as the recession and falloff in natural gas prices, he did was not able to follow through with his plan. With plans to better the environment, Brown signed a law stating by the year 2020, 33 percent of California’s energy would be powered by renewable resources. It is no secret that the issues talked about in the Green Power article, are real. Global warming and the pollution of the earth are in-fact serious problems. As the article stated in many places, the use of fossil fuels and coal are at an unacceptable high. Without immediate action and cooperation from the whole planet, our beautiful earth will continue to deteriorate to a state that we may not be prepared for. Life for the upcoming generations will more than likely be way different than what we experience now. Parents, children, cousins, co-workers, friends, and nearly everyone able to grasp the concept of global warming and the danger the earth is in are all wondering what is going to happen to the environment in the upcoming years.

Fossil fuels are currently the most widely used source of nonrenewable energy in today’s society. These sources of energy are used to generate power for both commercial and personal use in a number of different ways. “In 2005, more than 3/4 of total world energy consumption was through the use of fossil fuels.” (Environmental Literacy Council, 2008) Oil, the leading energy resource depended upon to fuel everyday functions produces 43.4 % of our world’s energy. Natural Gas, the second most relied upon resource produces 15.6 % of the world’s energy followed by coal, which produces 8.3 % of the world’s energy. Unsurprisingly, North America is the number one consumer of nonrenewable energy resources, consuming approximately 25 % of the fossil fuels extracted from the earth. The researches that formed and became the Green Revolution changed the agricultural technologies of many places and peoples. The Green Revolution was an introduction of a new technology of scientifically bred crops that went worldwide. In 1945 the Green Revolution started as leaders addressed the issues of hunger and starvation with the Green Revolution as the solution, and although it helped many people at the time, the Green Revolution is debated today whether it environmentally crushed many societies or was a worldwide helpful event.…

Imagine this: a world with the sky darker than coffee, trees nowhere in sight, and life nowhere to be found. This is the world that is slowly being created by Global Warming, and unless actions are done this world is inevitable. 2016 was the hottest year in record, and it is believed to only get warmer and warmer as time goes. This is can also be seen in the literature “There Will Come Soft Rains” by Sara Teasdale and “August 2026: There Will Come Soft Rains” by Ray Bradbury. The Industrial Revolution may have been one of the first dominos to fall that has lead to this current situation but now on the American people. And although going green may be expensive, U.S. leaders can no longer deny the fact that Global Warming is not happening and there needs to be more green laws to help slow the effect of…

In his essays “Kids, Trees, and Climate Change” and “The Green Dream” Mark Hertsgaard informs us of a current would issue that is occurring that was created by humans, global warming. Americans should take global warming as a serious matter because it could extinct some plants or animals due to the climate warming up which is not suitable for some species. Also it creates ice caps to melt at rapid speeds which could lead to parts of the states that live on a border of the ocean to flood. Mark describes the issue and advises what needs to be done by first grabbing our attention. In “The Green Dream” he stated that each year, the United States government purchase 56,000 new vehicles from Detroit for official use.…

In order to reducing gasoline, we have to recycle our garbage. Recycle can reduce garbage such as plastic bags, bottles, papers or glass. For instance, when we buy foods, we can use our own containers instead of plastic bags. Another example is after finish drinking the water from the bottle; we can reuse it or use our own bottle. If all this is being reuse, human can reduce deforestation and help save environment. Besides, turn off electricity if unused. It can save thousands of carbon dioxide and buy product that have energy saving because it saves cost and save environment.…

Over the last century global temperatures have increased rapidly, and this period has been called global warming. However many have disputed how this rapid increase in the change in the temperature have been brought about. There is a general agreement among scientists that the changes in the climate over the last century are as a result of human activities. They have reached this consensus as they have been able to link the sudden change in rate of the temperature increase to the development of industrial activities beginning with the industrial revolution. The industrial activities that our modern civilisation depends upon have raised atmospheric carbon dioxide levels causing a rise in the amount of greenhouse gases that insulate the Earth. These extra emissions of greenhouse gases have led to a thicker layer of greenhouse gases present in the Earth’s atmosphere. The main causes of this rise in greenhouse gas emission are fossil fuels. The burning of these fossil fuels has allowed us to develop, both economically and technologically, which in turn has enabled us to advance as a civilisation. However the use of these fossil fuels has…

Did you know that by our everyday habits and choices, the average American puts out 22 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year? Experts studying the recent climate history of the earth agree now that global warming is occurring at a precipitous rate, and human activities are the dominant force driving the trend. Our smokestacks, tailpipes, and burning forests emit CO2 and other gasses that add to the planet’s natural greenhouse effect, allowing sunlight in, but preventing some of the resulting heat from radiating back to space. Many climate experts say that without big curbs in greenhouse gas emissions, the 21st century could see temperatures rise 3 to 8 degrees, weather patterns sharply shift, ice sheets shrink, and seas rise several feet. The problem of global warming seems overwhelming, but there is a lot you can do to help. Reducing your personal share of global warming emissions is easier than you think.…

Throughout the past few decades the public has been made aware of the many threatening environmental changes happening to the world. This domino effect has proven to be the world’s most wicked problem because of how quickly things tend to escalate. Climate change alone has proven to have the most relationships with other environmental issues happening across the world and that is due to the interdependence of each and every issue. The first step in actually solving this issue is to not only to acknowledge these relationships, but to figure out a solution that can be applied globally.…

Because of the climate change, the earth is in danger. People don’t realize that the things they use or do every day are hurting the earth and living things. Nature.org says, “…one-fourth of Earth’s species will be headed for extinction by 2050 if the warming trend continues at its current rate…” Because the temperature is increasing, ice is melting. Because ice is melting, sea levels are rising. Higher temperatures don’t only melt ice but evaporates the moisture in the air. Evaporation will take away all of the land’s water leaving it as dry as a desert. With a drought now in progress, it will make it harder to find water and support agriculture.…

Peter Singer suggests that this dilemma “forces us to think differently about our ethics”. World leaders of the past viewed our resources as immeasurable and the concept of running out of natural resources and polluting our environment did not help shape public opinion. Recent years have shown man's ignorance and the irreparable damage it can cause. CFC's have depleted the ozone layer, even leaving holes in some areas, and devastate many more lives with skin cancer. The shocking revelation of our dwindling supply of fossil fuels combined with skyrocketing prices supports innovating new ideas for energy. Scientists further expand this argument by evidence that industrialized nations that burn fossil fuels are the leading contributers to the exponential climate shift.. Today's technology links people from all walks of life together in ways never imagined. One must accept the view that we are all in this together in order to solve the problem of global warming.…
