Grignard Reaction Lab
The purpose of this lab experiment was to take the reagents of magnesium and Bromobenzene to create the Grignard reagent of phenylmagnesium before its converted to the final product of triphenylmethanol. Then the product was purified via methods such as recrystallization and filtration, before it was finally characterized via a series of methods such as TLC, melting point, IR, H NMR, and C NMR. Before the lab even began, the first thing done to ensure a safe successful reaction was to oven dry all the glassware used in the experiment for 25 minutes. After those 25 minutes, the first thing done to achieve these goals was to obtain 0.1548 g of magnesium ribbon. When magnesium is stored, it starts to react with the oxygen and this forms a magnesium oxide layer that hinders the …show more content…
While a lot of the magnesium was stuck to the side, it eventually changed to brown-ish after 20 minutes of stirring. What this color showcased was that the Grignard reagent was actually forming. What was happening at a chemical level when the reaction began stirring was that on the surface of the magnesium, since the magnesium was partially positive, it donated 2 of its electrons with help of the ether solvent, causing a bond to form between the bromine and magnesium to form, and thus the formation of the Grignards reagent. After this color change was noticed, more bromobenzene was added in small 0.5 increments for multiple reasons, such as to ensure the complete formation of the grignards reagent, help the magnesium dissolve, and to minimize side product formation, since adding all the extra bromobenzene at once could destabilize the reaction. Very little heat was also added to the reaction mixture via the hot plate, but the flask was hovered above the hot plate, and why this was done was to help in the dissolving of the

Grignard reaction Abstract: In this laboratory, triphenylmethanol was synthesised from reacting benzophenone and bromobenzene using Grignard reaction. As the reaction was to set up to produce a Grignard reagent and then recrystallize it to obtain pure sample. The percentage yield obtained was 55% and its melting point was 161 co which is within the literature value 160-163 co. In addition to that the IR spectroscopy confirmed the molecule structure to be triphenylmethanol. Introduction: The Grignard…

The purpose of this experiment was to synthesize triphenylmethanol from a Grignard reagent. The Grignard reaction technique was used in this synthesis but due to the fact that it is such a strong nucleophile and base, it was important to prevent water from interfering with the Grignard reaction. Purity of the product was determined by measuring the melting point. Reagent Table: Structure Name Molecular formula Molar mass Density Melting point Boiling Point Diethyl ether C4H10O…

The Grignard Reaction Abstract Through the use of the Grignard reaction, a carbon-carbon bond was formed, thereby resulting in the formation of triphenylmethanol from phenyl magnesium bromide and benzophenone. A recrystallization was performed to purify the Grignard product by dissolving the product in methanol. From here, a melting point range of 147.0 °C to 150.8 °C was obtained. The purified product yielded an IR spectrum with major peaks of 3471.82 cm-1, 3060.90 cm-1, 1597.38 cm-1, and 1489…

Introduction In a Grignard reaction, a Grignard reagent (R–MgX) adds to the carbonyl group in an aldehyde or ketone to form an alcohol (Figure 1). The reaction of a Grignard reagent with formaldehyde can be to synthesize a primary alcohol, with any other aldehyde can be used to synthesize a secondary alcohol, while the reaction with ketone is useful in the synthesis of a tertiary alcohol. Figure 1. General reaction mechanism of a Grignard Reaction The preparation of the Grignard reagent involves…

Experiment C. Aim: To protect one of two carbonyl groups (C1) in order to allow the other to react twice with a Grignard followed by removal of the protecting group by acid hydrolysis to give final product (C2). Method: Ethyl acetoacetate (30.03g), ethylene glycol (15.01g) and toluene-p-sulphonic acid (0.13g) were added to a 250 cm3 round bottomed flask, containing a stirrer bar and toluene (100 cm3), fitted with a condenser and dean-stark head. Solution was heated strongly under reflux using…

    | Reactions of Grignard Reagents with Carbonyls | | | Tuesday 1:30 | 2/28/2012 | | Introduction This experiment explores the reactivity pattern for the addition of Grignard reagents to three different carbonyl groups: a ketone, an ester, and a carbonate. Grignard reagents are organometallic compounds that have a carbon-metal bond, such as carbon-magnesium. Grignard reagents are formed from the reaction of an alkyl, cycloalkyl, or aryl halide and magnesium metal in dry ether…
