Grouchy Ladybug
The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle is a concept book which takes place bright and early in the morning. This book centers around the main characters, the grouchy ladybug and the friendly ladybug. The grouchy ladybug did not feel that it should have to share the aphids with the nice ladybug and insisted on fighting the nice ladybug to settle who will get the aphids, until he decided that nice ladybug was not “big” enough. The grouchy ladybug, despite its size, was looking for a fight and challenged everyone he saw regardless of their size or strength. After encountering several other animals, both big and small, the grouchy ladybug ended up back where it started, on the leaf with the nice ladybug. This time it was so tired that when the nice
ladybug attempts to share the aphids with it, it reluctantly accepted. The ladybug finally realized the good things that come from being happy, friendly and possessing good manners. This story is narrated from a third person limited point of view. The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle could be used to teach students to tell time or to reinforce the skill of time telling and to help students who have difficulties with number identification. During various time periods of the day the grouchy ladybug encounters various animals in search of finding a worthy opponent. Students could create their own ladybug using the body to create a clock with mobile hands. Students will demonstrate their ability to be able to tell time on an analog clock. To include English Language Learners (ELL), students could learn the times (hours) that the ladybug visited each animal in Spanish.
