In 1879 a 20-year-old man named Sir Henry Mill Pellatt became locally known for beating the amateur world record for running of the mile. This fueled the ambition and aspiration for success that he seemed to have been born with. Little did he know that in just over 20 years he would own the largest private home in North America. By the time he was thirty Sir Henry owned 21 companies. His newfound money and love of art that came from visits to Europe brought the idea of Casa Loma, a Gothic/Medieval style mansion that overlooks Toronto. It took 3 years to build and yet was only lived in for 10 years. However, it is now one of the most visited tourist destinations in Toronto and the perfect setting for weddings and events as well as movie and TV productions. After looking at the it’s history, character and physical features, Casa Loma’s “sense of place” can be easily defined as romantic, beautiful and a little bit tragic.…
Capture the Beauty Lisa Eisele Brown Mackie College Capture the Beauty Three photographers that have taken amazing photographs are Gregory Crewdson, Nicholas Samaras, and Ansel Adams. Although all of these photographers capture the perception of beauty and nature, they show some similarities but differ in many ways. Gregory Crewdson captures American realist landscape photography, Nicholas Samaras captures the sea underwater and its creatures to bring out the beauty of the marine life world, and Ansel Adams a very well-known photographer takes pictures of America’s natural wonders. Gregory Crewdson grew up in Brooklyn, New York, in the Park Slope neighborhood. At a young age while attending high school he was actually able to graduate…
Carol Payne, an associate professor of history and photography theories at Carleton University, wrote an article titled “How Shall We Use These Gifts?” Imaging the Land in the National Film Board of Canada’s Still Photography Division, in 2007. Her article was written to examine photographs and photo-essays that were produced by the National Film Board of Canada’s Still Photography Division, during the 1950s and 1960s. The images reflect Canadian landscapes and natural resources. These images reached a large Canadian and international audience, numbering in the millions. In effect, it served as a portrayal as Canada. The purpose of Carol Payne’s essay was to focus on photo-stories that were produced between 1955 and 1969. She argued that…
Do you ever wonder where and how photographers start up their own business and what made them decide to go into that business. Or what about wondering what the life is like being one. Well in this essay I chose a specific photographer/photographers to interview and ask some of these questions. Some of them just very simple and others more complex to really get an understanding of their reasonings.…
As I walked into Pier 24 Photograph, I experienced sentiments of curiosity and anticipation. Photography has always intrigued me and having the opportunity to observe these photographs that related to this idea of “The Grain of the Present” illuminated the talent that San Francisco possess. As I walked around, observing the various works by the skilled photographers who must have spent countless hours capturing the perfect image, one particular photograph captured my attention.…

Architecture is the art and profession of planning, designing and constructing form, space and ambiance to reflect a functional and aesthetic environment. People spend most of every day in a building of some kind. Whether it is a place to live, work, play, learn, worship, shop, or eat, buildings influence and shape people’s everyday lives. No matter if these places are private or public; indoors or out, rooms, skyscrapers, or complexes, architects are responsible for the designing of these structures. Architects are skilled in the arts and sciences of building designs and develop and turn concepts for structures into reality. Throughout history there have been many fields…
Growing up near Detroit, I have personally seen the poor conditions and standards of life that some people are living in. Although I have completed many hours of volunteer work in an effort to improve the bad conditions in the city, I feel as if I have not done enough. That is why after reading SCU’s vision, the aspect that attracted me most was the idea of building a more humane, just and sustainable world.…
It all started when we left from the hotel around five o’clock, hoping to get to the CN Tower on time. We were on vacation in Toronto in mid July, we had just arrived here a day ago from Niagara Falls. When we left we would have never imagined that this would be one of the longest walks some of us have taken. Pleasantly, we left for the CN Tower, which we thought couldn’t be a great amount of distance from our hotel. We were wrong!…
The Museum of Modern Art’s exhibition had a lot to offer educationally, and offered a lot of creative ideas. As a student it’s very easy to try and capture the most famous scenic image that we know for example, the Manhattan skyline, the Brooklyn Bridge, or images from Central Park. These artists featured in the Museum of Modern Art are exploring ideas that are much more personal to them. Personal ideas, feelings, and issues are coming up as a topic of discussion in photography, which hopefully can expand outward, beyond photography so that we don’t overlook and dismiss our own feelings and the feelings of the people around…
5:45 a.m., Wednesday, Boxing Day, 2013. I was sleeping soundly in my bed when the phone rang. I could hear the sound of someone getting up to pick up the phone. Shortly afterwards, I could hear the sound of weeping. I heard my Mom tell my Dad that Oma had passed away. Two days ago we had received word that she had fallen on her back and suffered a concussion. The fall might have been caused by her struggle with Alzheimer’s.…
As I look to the scenery I acknowledge its beautiful details. It is a wonder of the world that soon may fell between the cracks. A place that I will cherish all my life, a place that is one of a kind. Two hundred places I’ve seen only once. Vivid in my memory for a few years and but soon may be forgotten. But this did not. It will remain in me forever, and as scroll up it reached the end. The end of my photo album I have in my phone last summer vacation I had with my…
When I was only three years old, my family made the long 18-hour airplane trek from General Pico, La Pampa, Argentina to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. I lived in Saskatoon from the age of three to the age of thirteen.…

The photographer I decided to choose goes by the name Jay Maisel; he mastered his craft within the city of New York. He is one of the top natual-light photographers in the field today. Maisel has developed an eye for photography that allows him to really capture the essesnce of everyday objects that surround us in our daily lives. Jay Maisel’s pictures are almost percieved by some to be like paintings, which is only natural for him because he was a painter long before he becoma a photograper. His awareness with darks and lights allows him to creatively craft an art piece that is visually appleaing to the human eye. Many of his pictures are vibrant in color and capture the art that surronded New York, whether it be a man in a bus or bright colored room filled with chairs. According to the…
