School violence is a major concern that is facing this nation and the world as a whole. It is forming a trending topic all over the nation that will end up disastrous if not curbed. The year 2012 saw horrifying mass shootings across the country from a primary school in Aurora, Colorado to an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. In December, 58 percent of Americans wanted stricter laws surrounding the sale of firearms while only six percent believed the laws should be less strict, but in March of 2013 only 47 percent of Americans felt there should be stricter gun control laws and 11 percent believed gun laws should be less restrictive. I oppose the enactment of firm laws on gun possession. I have my reasons and they are clearly stated below.
Gun control laws should not be very strict because law-abiding citizens have a right to protect themselves. Stricter gun control laws would make it more difficult for the segment of the population who would use them to protect their families. History has shown that criminals, on the other hand, will surely never have any problems with access to guns, no matter what the law. Passing stricter gun control laws will give criminals an even bigger advantage.
Another reason for gun possession is that it helps in saving lives. The Connecticut school gunman was there for 10 minutes until the police arrived and 26 people had their lives stolen in that time. What if the principle in the school had a gun and was allowed to carry it? It wouldn't have taken 10 minutes to get to that class room and eliminate the threat. Maybe 5 minutes at most. Half the time to respond, half the shots, and half the lives saved (that's 13 lives). Now what if the teacher across the hall had a gun? Maybe a minutes or two at max. That's upward of 20 lives saved. Now think if the teacher in that classroom had a gun, there could have been no deaths that day and we could all be celebrating the heroic event of
