Gustave Flaubert's A Simple Heart
“At twenty-five she looked forty. By the time she reached her fifties, she was ageless – and, with her constant silence, her upright figure and her measured gestures, she seemed like a woman made out of wood” (6). In Gustave Flaubert’s “A Simple Heart”, we do not find out a lot of information about Félicité, even though she is the main character. However throughout the story we receive small bits of information about Félicité and her life. We get those details because it allows the reader to get a general understanding of what makes her tick, but also to expose to the reader how her life evolved over time.
Seeing as there are only a handful of things that we learn about Félicité, each of the different events does not do much for the story by itself. However when all of the information gets put together the idea of the plot seems to come to light. They are

Then her mother died, her sisters scattered” (6). When a person has to deal with that much suffering, especially early in life, a trend of unhappiness begins to occur. Furthermore we learn about she was never really wanted by the people she becomes acquainted with like Madam Aubain or Théodore. This would have a long lasting effect on her because when you get mistreated for so long, you start to believe
When you read a story about someone you expect to see a lot more of the minor details about their personal lives and past. In “A Simple Heart” however, you do not see a lot of those details because it may confuse the reader about what the really message of the story is. As a result Flaubert eliminates a lot of the information that would not really help him explain the journey of Félicité.
Even though some off the stuff would not have made much difference in the plot of the story, it would provide some nice background information. For example we never found out where she

The first introduction to the mystical character of Fleur Pillager occurs when Nanapush tells the story of how he found her in the Pillager cabin as the only surviving one of the tribe. She was 17 years old at that time and had nearly drowned 3 times. The first time when she nearly drowned in Lake Matchimanito two men went after her to save her. But it wasn't long afterward that those two men disappeared. "By saving Fleur Pillager, those two had lost themselves," said Nanapaush.(p.10) In this part of the book the reader gets the first impression that Fleur is some kind of witch with magical powers who has control over other people. Louise Erdrich gives many more examples in her novel showing how Fleur's control over everyone makes people cautious about her.…

My father had disappeared before my birth, and my mother never mentioned a single thing about him. Whenever she mentioned him, she did so out of spite and resentment. My mother and I lived happily together, singing and laughing at the things Grover’s Corners had for us. As I grew up, however, my mother changed from the sweet, kind person I had known to a cynical old woman who smoked cigarettes constantly. The mother I used to sing church hymns with had long disappeared, replaced by a vicious woman who considered her son as nothing more than a hindrance.…

Much like Flaubert’s Madame Bovary, Florentino Ariza is in love with soap operas and romance novels, so much so all his letters to Daza when they are young read just like one. He is so involved with the idea of romance after Fermina’s rejection of him he makes a pass time writing love letters for other couples. Ariza is all youthful passion and intensity saying, “Age has no reality except in the physical world. The essence of a human being is resistant to the passage of time. Our inner lives are eternal, which is to say that our spirits remain as youthful and vigorous as when we were in full bloom. Think of love as a state of grace, not the means to anything, but the alpha and omega. An end in itself.” Needless to say, he’s all swoon and flowery words as he makes his way into the bed of over six hundred women in the course of his life while pretending to be faithful to only Fermina. None of the women know about the others and each is told that she is his first and only, perpetuating Ariza’s illusion of himself that he is a heart sick and loyal love puppy in need of nurturing.…

The protagonist’s hatred towards his love is expressed at the beginning of the poem even though she has not revealed her insensitivity comments about the family until the end. The man has no idea of the girl's mind at this point – he is describing his own feelings when seeing the ragged poor people “not only was I touched…but I was even a little ashamed…” (Baudelaire 53). Then, it is only right after this when his lover emitted his words full of hate towards the vagrant family. This contrast makes Baudelaire realize the absolute impossibility of any true and real connection between them “how difficult it is to understand on another…how incommunicable thought is…” (Baudelaire 53). Plus, Baudelaire believes that his lover is the ideal example…

Gustave Flaubert’s short story “A Simple Soul” is about a woman of a simple mind yet a devoted heart, named Felicite. Although she suffered from the tremendous loss of her parents early on in her life, she continued to love unconditionally, even until her last breath. When she was 18 years old, she fell in love with a young man that left her for a rich, old woman “in order to escape the conscription…” Following this immense heartbreak, she left the farm she was working at and headed for Pont-l’Eveque where she would meet the widow that she would work over 50 years for. Madame Aubain was no easy woman to work for and treated Felicite badly. But even though she was demeaned, beaten, and unappreciated, Felicite lived a life of servitude and would remain devout to Madame Aubain until the very end. Throughout all the pain and suffering Felicite endured, she was given a parrot that seemed to make all the cruelty she had undergone go away. While the parrot added admiration, love, and comfort to her life, it also caused the decline of her health. Felicite led a life of simplicity and in the end, she was happy with her life. The most interesting elements in “A Simple Soul” were Felicite’s health declining over a parrot, Loulou getting stuffed and worshipped, and her entire life being centered on said parrot. While all of these can be looked at in a negative connotation, in Felicite’s eyes, the power symbol of the parrot was worshipped in a positive light.…

Throughout the novel, Florentino has numerous sexual encounters with women , however, he has no emotion connection to any of the women he sleeps with. Florentino's “no strings attached” relationships appear to be distractions to keep his mind of his true love, Fermina. The author addresses this disconnection with one woman which he [the author] states, “...he [Florentino] realized he felt happy with her, above all in bed, but that she would never replace Fermina Daza...”. It can be argued that Florentino's sexual escapades are purely a means of coping with his rejection from Fermina, however, he decides to dedicate his life to her and to convince her to love him in return. Despite his constant effort, Fermina continues to reject Florentino due to their social class differences and her marital status.…

This book as you understand wasn’t an exception. I was advised not to do that but of course I threw the caution to the wind, following my awful curiosity. The first phrase that struck my eye was -“Florence had now to face a life without her beloved Leo”. But I wasn’t impressed. I supposed it to be an ordinary, trite and touching love-story, moving typical housewives to tears. The realization of my wrongness was approaching step-by-step.…
