Research is the scientifically studying an issue carefully and extensively to attain a deep knowledge of the topic. According to Community Connect to Research (2015, para.1), “the development of new medical treatments and cures would not happen without health research and the active role of research volunteers.” Before the implementation of the scientific health care research, the physicians in the past would provide treatment based on what worked for the previous patients. Research has taken the guesswork out of many aspects of healthcare. For example, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires testing on all new medications before physicians …show more content…
can prescribe them to patients.
This paper will present the importance of healthcare research currently used. A discussion about the importance of healthcare research in relation to the impact on evidence-based practices; including this individual’s personal view of healthcare research. Lastly, highlights concerning why research is important in relation to the concept of evidence-based practice.
The Importance of Health Care Research Health care research is the scientific method used for the investigation of studying how health care technologies, organizational structures and processes, social factors, finance systems, and individual behaviors effect access to health care delivery (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2014). Included in the health care delivery are patient safety, health care costs and access to quality care. Medical research uses current knowledge to focus on the common health care issues for decision making to improve care processes thus improving patient outcomes (Stevens, 2013). The importance of health care research is to protect patients and improve the health of individuals and communities. The use of health care research promotes quality of care by studying, investigating and determining the best practice and outcomes for certain diseases. ”Clinical research has evaluated the efficacy of diagnostic methods and treatment interventions” (Steinwachs & Hughes, 2008, p. 1-173). Immunizations and Infectious disease treatments and care have been researched to determine the proper management. The medical research is needed to determine which interventions make a difference in the research or what works and what doesn’t. The evidence-based research and the reviews of research literature can be used in determining the quality-of-care standards.
Healthcare Research and the Impact on Evidence-Based Practices Evidence-based practice (EBP) in the health care focuses on the improvement of the quality of health care in the United States.
Evidence-Based Practice reviews the scientific literature related to a wide variety of clinical and health service topics. According to The Center for Evidence-Based Practices (2015), the description of the evidence-based practice is the thorough and practical use of the best available evidence. The evidence-based practice uses clinical expertise and patient values to guide health care decision-making. The available evidence is in the form of scientific methods such as qualitative research, using scientific principles, randomized controlled trials and case studies are used. The impact of the evidence-based practice is in great demand due to the institution of The Affordable Care Act and Health Care Reform. The restructuring of the health care system has a goal of providing or improving quality measures, decrease patient readmissions, better access to health care for patients, and improved patient satisfaction. Patient safety is the main focus such as the decrease in patient harm in the hospital and in the home, such as reduction of medication errors and reducing …show more content…
falls.
Individual’s Personal View on Healthcare Research
Health care research and the evidence-based research can improve the safety of patients, increase the quality of care, and improve health outcomes. Using research-based standards of care like those found in Core Measures such as Acute MI, Pneumonia, and Heart Failure can decrease the length of stay in the hospital and improve the patients’ outcomes. The patients all receive the same type of inpatient care. However, the patients care plans are individualized. By all means, each patient has an individualized plan of care as each person has different needs, abilities, and support systems.
Health research is needed to determine new best practices for many of the diagnosis, care and for the core measures.
Medical research is needed to help develop other best practices. This individual uses peer reviewed and medical research articles to conduct Sentinel Event reviews, root cause analysis (RCA), and procedure reviews. Determining why the event occurred helps in reducing the chance of another occurrence or another person doing the same thing.
Conclusion
According to Stevens (2013, para.8), “evidence-based practice unifies research evidence with clinical expertise and encourages individualization of care through the inclusion of patient preferences.” Medical research provides the needed evidence to improve patient outcomes and reduce harm to patients. The transformation of the health care facilities to research-based care requires teamwork between all disciplines in the facility. Patient safety is everyone’s
responsibility.
