When you are standing on the starting line, it is not hard to spot the guy or the girl who is taking the race seriously. Out of the five half marathons I have ran this is the easiest runner to spot. I usually notice this runner first. They are the ones standing completely still on the starting line staring at their watch. These men or women look the part of an elite athlete with a lean body and long legs. During the race, you will notice this athlete running with long strides and is barely sweaty. You will notice them look at their watch and look back up with a smile on their face. When they reach the finish line, they look happy that they have finished the race. They will usually be the group of people wearing tutus or wearing a costume. During one half marathon that I have ran, I noticed a guy wearing a shirt that said “I was dared to do this.” “Wish me luck!” During the race, you will notice these runners chitchatting about everything under the sun but the race. You will even notice them Face Timing their friends. Every mile marker they will yell “only so and so more miles to go” Once they reach the finish line, they will jump up and strike a pose for their finishing photo with a grin on their face.
