From a sports perspective, the Red Sox always schedule a home series during race weekend. The process culminates with a day game on Monday that ends in the early afternoon. As fans spill out of Fenway Park, they make their way to the marathon course and join the already tens of thousands of spectators that line the course just a few blocks from the baseball stadium. It’s as much a part of the city as their beloved Red Sox. In 2013, a horrific event tried to tear down the sense of pride that is felt by the people of Boston. As someone who was present at the race in both 2013 and 2014, I’ve seen just how much the event means to the city. Just after the bombing in 2013, you could see it on the faces of the locals. People walked the streets in a daze as if they collectively got punched in the stomach. Words weren’t spoken, only nods and the occasional comforting hand on a shoulder.
But, one year later, the city had and obvious recovery. The spirit that had been absolutely crushed not one year prior, soared higher than ever before. The energy in Boston on race weekend was on a level that I haven’t before. The Boston Marathon was, and always will be, an event that should be on everyone’s bucket list. The experience serves to inspire, motivate and uplift all those who participate in the weekend. You don’t have to be a sports fan or even a runner. You simply have to appreciate the will power that human beings can instill within one
