The History Of The Fast Food Industry
Most of us think of fast food as a recent phenomenon connected with the rise of modernism and contemporary culture. The truth is the origins of cheap, readily available food date back a long way, and fast food didn’t always get the bad rap it does now.
Origins of fast food:
The origins of fast food are really the origins of street food. Fast food has always been associated with urban development and this means whenever highly populated areas sprung up in history; so did fast food. It has its roots in the Popinas and bread and wine stands of Ancient Rome and the ready-to-eat noodle stalls in East Asian cities. Stuff like flat-breads, falafel and other pre-cooked hot meals were all over the streets of the ancient and medieval world and these types of vendors can be considered the first kind of ‘fast food’. In the Middle Ages urban expanses like London and Paris were brimming with vendors that sold cooked meats, pies, flans, pasties and the like.
The UK had a big part to play in development of local fast foods. Coastal areas particularly served oysters and local seafood directly on the quay, and trawler fishing soon led to the first fish and chips shop in 1860.
The first modern fast food restaurant:
It is of course the US who are most notorious for fast food, and this is tied up with the development of the automobile post WW1. The car was an American icon and soon allowed the ‘drive-thru’ another American icon, to develop. The first ever fast food restaurant is generally considered to be the White Castle restaurant in Wichita in 1916. The restaurant concept was based on offering a limited menu based around the hamburger; producing high volumes, at high speed and low cost. This was the start of the fast food chain mentality in America. By 1951 ‘fast food’ was listed in the dictionary.
