Hamlet and Othello Essay
Shakespeare’s works are still being used and praised to this day, especially the tragedies filled with dastardly villains, romance, and betrayal. In all of Shakespeare’s plays, he portrays astonishing characters that go through the most intriguing of struggles. Hamlet and Othello, being two of Shakespeare’s most famous plays, are great examples of his writing still used to this day. Shakespeare’s characters share their pain and suffering with the audiences as the main characters make the decisions that greatly impact the play. Shakespeare’s emphasis on their character’s mentality, the behaviors, and their traits play a large part in the development of these characters. Shakespeare often pushes his main characters to the edge of their limits and makes his audience question the character’s sanity and judgment. places them in challenging situations. In Hamlet, Shakespeare has the ghost of Hamlet’s father appear before his son and tells Hamlet to seek revenge; to which he agrees without hesitation.
As in Othello, Shakespeare pushes the protagonist by having Iago deceive Othello time and time again to the point where the character has no idea what is true. Shakespeare uses these methods to test his characters and to leave his audience to wonder just how clear are the characters thinking; did they still have the sanity the characters had in the beginning, if they had any at all. Then giving the main characters various traits such as Hamlet’s rash behavior or Othello’s trusting nature only shows to bring more drama and poses more challenges to the main characters, ultimately aiding Shakespeare’s goal of helping his audience bond with his characters and learn something about society or themselves from his plays. These are only the beginning of Shakespeare’s methods of making important characters that bring his plays to
life. In the play "Hamlet", William Shakespeare goes deep in to Hamlets emotions against the issues he has been experiencing. William Shakespeare shows the afflictions towards the marriage between his mother and uncle, who has wanted all the power he can and ended up murdering the King for it. The ghost of Hamlets father appears in need to speak to Hamlet on how Hamlet's uncle has betrayed everybody by killing Hamlet's father to seek all the power he can get. However, Hamlet does not immediately react towards the situation, he stalls into seeking revenge which leads to driving him insane. There is a major difference in each of the characters flaws in which Hamlet think's everything clearly but lacks on how to act upon the situation in which it leads to tragic. On the other hand, Iago plants suspicion to Othello towards his wife Desdemona in which she cheated on him. Othello being too trusting, causes him to have doubts towards his wife Desdemona. Othello listens to Iago's word rather then believing his wife. He is caught up between what Iago is telling him and what Desdemona tells him. He believes more Iago because Iago keeps feeding Othello lies, therefor Othello is too trusting against everyone he sees. On the other hand, Hamlet reacts very rational in trying to seek revenge against his uncle. Both characters have to go through their own issues, and yet they both fail due do to their anger against the people they ought to care.
