Hamlet Horatio Characteristics
Horatio is an intelligent and insightful man, relentless, rational, placid, a messenger of truth, and Hamlet’s one true confidant. He plays a minor role in the play, nonetheless, he is of the utmost importance to Hamlet as well as being admired by many readers. He feels deeply for Hamlet and loves him with everything he is capable of, as he would never try to control or influence him like so many do. Hamlet has a deep friendship with Horatio and praises him for all the honorable qualities that he posses, while trying to learn from him what he lacks, like self control and the virtue of truth. The faithfulness of Horatio is so strong that while Hamlet is there dying, Horatio is ready to commit suicide so that he will not have to live without …show more content…
When Rosencrantz and Guildenstern come to Denmark they show that they are very loyal to Claudius, but they do not show that same quality quite as much when it comes to Hamlet. Horatio is a loyal and faithful person in general, those are two qualities that he carries naturally, but at the same time he is most loyal to his good friend Hamlet and he would never put Claudius before his friend. In the play, not only do Rosencrantz and Guildenstern demonstrate loyalty to Claudius but they too show that they are a prime example of a suck up “But we both obey, and here give up ourselves, in the full bent to lay our service freely at your feet.” (2.2.31-34). They do whatever Claudius tells them to, even if it could potentially ruin their friendship with Hamlet, which it does as well as getting them killed. Whether or not they know what Claudius’ intentions are when he sends them to spy on Hamlet, they still do it without any question and they are never truly there for him in his time of need. While Horatio is there for him every moment, as a companion and an example, he never once strays from Hamlet and Hamlet never feels as if he needs to question Horatio because he knows his intentions and where his heart

Detail 1: To begin with, Prince Hamlet in “Hamlet” is considered to be a scholar, a thinker, and the kind of person who would not act without thoroughly analysing the circumstances. Hamlet, having suffered a sudden of death of a loved one, had to watch the marriage of his mother “with wicked speed” to his uncle, Claudius (Shakespeare 31). Grief stricken and “taking (his mother’s actions) to heart”, it would make sense that the sarcastic Hamlet coped with his feelings through acting without care (Shakespeare 27). Horatio, Hamlet’s friend “from Wittenberg,” would have a genuine relationship with Hamlet, demonstrated by how he decided to tell him about the ghost at all and his loyalty throughout the entire play (Shakespeare 31). Knowing Hamlet for a while, Horatio would be understanding of Hamlet’s method of grieving, but would be annoyed at the lack of interest of what he has to say, since he knows how important it is. Hamlet,…

He returns from England with a new attitude and allows himself to undertake Horatio’s guidance, ‘There’s a divinity that shapes our ends’. Interestingly, Hamlet does not partake in a soliloquy in this final act, symbolising that he is now ready to finally take revenge against Claudius. Shakespeare in this final scene also reveals to the audience that destiny will inevitably expose death in possibly more ways than one. The way in which he has displayed this thought throughout the play begins with the death of Polonius and ends with the death of Hamlet. Shakespeare then turns to tragedy upon the death of Hamlet as Horatio is given the responsibility to tell the story of his vengeful ways and controls Hamlets emotions as his moral obligations had faded. The human quality of tragedy is well recognized in this play as it attracts large amounts of sympathy, however sympathy is not felt for all of the…

Sometimes the way the world perceives somebody’s character is not always accurate. In Shakespeare’s infamous play Hamlet, Hamlet is thought to be a mentally unstable character. When he isn’t feigning madness, Hamlet is a well educated individual, who is capable of manipulation as well as a capacity for sarcastic wit. Shakespeare effectively portrays Hamlet’s true character through his interactions with other characters as well as his instinctive emotional responses.…

He possesses a level of knowledge demonstrated throughout the play, while advising Shakespeare on what he believes he should do or not do. The first sign of this is when Horatio and Hamlet encounter the ghost of King Hamlet. "Why, what should be the fear? I do not set my life at a pin 's fee, and for my soul, what can it do to that"? (Shakespeare 653) Hamlet has already made up his mind about following the ghost, and finding out what it wants. Horatio pleads for Hamlet not to go, but he doesn 't listen anyway. Although Horatio couldn 't sway Hamlet from following the ghost, at least he was concerned and made Hamlet take the time to think about it…

Hamlet loved his father, King Hamlet, and it was his death that broke young Hamlet's heart. It is the love he had for his father that brought him to his doom. After King Hamlet's death he appeared as a ghost moving through the castle at one o'clock every morning. When the guards and Horatio, Hamlet's best friend, noticed this ghostly figure, Horatio quite intelligently believed that he could get the ghost to speak with Hamlet. The next day the two guards, Horatio, and young Hamlet were present to speak to the ghost of King Hamlet. The ghost told Hamlet that he was murdered by Claudius, his brother, who had been sworn in as the new king and married his wife, Hamlet’s mother, Gertrude. After hearing this, young Hamlet was asked to avenge his father’s death, but in doing so his mother was to remain unharmed. Hamlet, being the loving and devoted son he was, and unable to accept Claudius as the leader to replace his father, accepted King Hamlet’s request. After this encounter, young Hamlet refused to tell the guardsman and Horatio what happened but made it known that he would act like a…

I think one of the more oblivious and not so negative FOIL is Horatio, through all the madness they remain friends. In the play you get to experience the trust and loyalty between Hamlet and Horatio. The two characters are very much alike. They both show acts of kindness or softer side. I think Shakespeare use Horatio to show a more positive happy side of Hamlet.…

In Hamlet, many think of Hamlet as being the main or only tragically flawed character within the play. However, in actuality, the play contains many other characters that possess varying severities of imperfection, some of which put the shortcomings of Hamlet, the title character of Hamlet, to shame. Despite the tragically flawed nature of Hamlet’s character, other characters in the play are clearly more flawed in comparison to Hamlet. As a result of this character’s imperfection, many of the characters within the play Hamlet are considered tragic; however, those in which this trait is predominant are Claudius, Laertes and Gertrude.…

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are told by Claudius to spy on Hamlet, they "..draw him on to pleasures and to gather...Whether aught to us unknown afflicts him thus" (II.ii.15). Rosencrantz and Guildenstern betray Hamlet by agreeing to spy on Hamlet to please their King, Claudius which allow deception to corrupt their friendship. Hamlet tells his mother "..my two schoolfellows,/Whom I will trust as I will adders fang'd.." (III.iv.204-205). This shows that Hamlet is no longer fooled by their false friendship and also shows the corruptive force of deception. Hamlet describes them as, "a sponge that soaks up the King's countenance, his rewards, his authorities."(IV,II,2) Hamlet knows that they are loyal to the king and for this reason he keeps his "antic disposition" when he is around them. Hamlet finds the letter ordering his own execution and switches the letter with one he forged telling England to execute Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Hamlet doesn’t feel guilty of this act because he believes they are guilty by association by working with Claudius, and leads them to their deaths which is caused by Hamlets deception towards…

Foundationally beginning with Gertrude’s narcissistic parenting, Hamlet is first introduced to the idea of untrustworthy female interactions on a maternal level.
