In the video, Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) principle Harp Heidi Van Hoesen Gorton performs the initial movement from Handel’s Harp Concerto. The setup is an empty stage at the Harpa Concert hall in Iceland and the harp is the leading role as the melody instrument. Therefore, a beautiful and brilliant musical composition which resonates for one to two seconds is registered.
Production
Heidi is a professional concert harpist and from the harp, she produces a mellow and resonating tone. She achieves this through a combination of notes which from harmonies. Additionally, due to the size and shape of the harp, she is able to produce unusual, resonating soothing music which brings peace, rest
and healthy effect both to the body and soul. This soothing effect is produced by the long strings and the sound box
Performance
The performance by Heidi is uplifting as it evokes the emotions of joy, happiness, and excitement. Heidi uses the modern harpist technique of plucking the instrument using the first four fingers of every hand. Additionally, she uses the pads of her fingers while plucking at the center of the harp. This technique achieves the desired rapid succession of the musical notes through the arpeggio. Through the arpeggio, Heidi shifts from one harmony to the next in the lower registration of composition. Notably, she also applies the glissando sweeping motion of the hands across the strings.
The glissando produces the blurring effect of the initial notes on the lowest registration of performance. In this case, the lowest notes intrude and avoid the glissando. As a result, the bass is executed at this point. Since the harp is solely the only instrument playing in a deserted hall, there is the absence of chamber music, which avoids drowning out the harp’s melody. Therefore, the music features a crystal clear sound.
Conclusion
The concert harp is used to perform jazz and also produce beautiful wedding reception banquets and concert musicals. The concert performance is categorized in terms of classical solo performance, chamber ensembles and as a soloist in a section or member of an orchestra. In this case, the performance is a solo composer.
