The Teaching of Hand Washing
One of the objectives of the Healthy People 2020 website is to prevent, reduce, and ultimately eliminate healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). HAIs are an increasing problem for our health care workers. Funding to treat HAIs will be the responsibility of the facility where the patient contracted the HAIs. Teaching about proper hand washing will reduce the risk of transferring any diseases to each other and to patients. Hand hygiene is the most effective way to prevent the spread of disease. The topic of hand washing is a subject for primary prevention for the community. Primary prevention is aimed to prevent diseases and illness in the community.
Education on proper hand washing was conducted on 06Nov2014 at the Saint Jude Guest Home. Employees of the sister facility of Crow Valley Guest Home attended also. The total of eight staff of the residential care homes attended an hour long training. The training consisted of a power point presentation that was delivered via laptop. The instructor discussed the power point presentation with the audience. A preprinted hand out from the World Health Organization was given before the lesson. The hand out had a summary of the information given by the power point presentation on hand washing. The staff was receptive to the training and were able to demonstrate correct techniques in hand washing. No costs were involved in the training provided to the staff of the residential homes.
The objective of the training was to increase the knowledge of the necessity of hand washing while working as a health care worker. The increase of proper hand washing is the ultimate goal of this training. The audience needs to learn the proper techniques of hand washing and the rationale behind it. The audience will also learn the different types of hand washing that a health care worker should know.
