Happiness
Happiness When people usually think of happiness, they usually associate it with money, family, or morals. Can money really make you happy? Can your family make you happy? Does standing by your morals make you happy? The truth is happiness has a universal meaning. It is an independent feeling an individual achieves depending on their particular situation. In other words, what makes one person happy may make another person miserable. Yet again, this portrays the idea of a worldwide interpretation of the word happiness. Specifically, “Space is Numeric” by Ellen Ullman questions the happiness of the author’s career due to a lack of fulfillment in her profession.

Every individual has a different way of feeling happy. Everyone lives their life to attain a state of satisfaction. While some find happiness right away, others may search awhile before becoming blissful. People fail to comprehend the value of joy because once they are happy; they want more things to be happy about. We as humans always want more. Individuals feel the need to want more for ourselves, leading to the competition between one another. We use all of our efforts on a day to day basis to achieve pleasure. Everyone has their own definition of happiness, making it unique. Today in our lives, happiness is observed in various ways because each person describes their inner feelings and emotions in ways that distinguish them from everyone else. The most common definition of happiness is that it is a state of outstanding feeling and it is an intense emotion. Some people say that happiness gives you the green light to benefit from your thoughts, emotions, and your surroundings. Each individual finds happiness in their own way. We all feel differently depending on the topic which differentiates us from one another. Our feelings are not codependent on each other because the way we think and view things are not the same.

Happiness can come from the simplest of things. Even the smallest things

In the short essay of “What Happiness Is” by Eduardo Porter, he gives explicit details pertaining to the complex word, happiness. In its own term, happiness is defined as, the state of being happy. According to Porter’s findings on happiness, he says that psychologists and economists believe this: “Most psychologists and economists who study happiness agree that what they prefer to call “subjective well-beings” comprises three parts: satisfaction meant to capture how people judge their lives measured up against their aspirations; positive feelings like joy; and the absence of negative feelings like anger” (457). Porter suggests that this does exist and that because it does it helps individuals through certain times, like: hardships, economy, family, country, sickness, and even death. He is saying that because happiness exists, individuals are able to overcome obstacles in their life, and are able to live longer and healthier. Porter does focus on the main issues and key abstract views of the word happiness. He covers important issues, by giving detail; he talks about the views of psychologists and economists’ views. “ In 1980s a new discipline called Prospect Theory—also known as behavioral economics—deployed the tools of psychology to analyze economic behavior” (458).…

To feel happy is something that seems to be a universal desire. However defining the feeling of happiness is not an easy thing to do. It can be described as a range of positive emotions ranging from contentment to joy (Spoors et al 2011). There are many factors that influence happiness both from within as well as outside a person. Inside influences would involve the brain and the biology of the individual. Outside factors would include relationships and social identity.…

What is happiness? That is not a question that may be easily answered. Due to the fact that every human-being possesses their own views on life, it is possible that there are innumerable interpretations of what is ultimately this idea seen as happiness. For the purpose of interpreting the idea of happiness as opposed to “being happy” I believe that it is necessary that there be a more continual and perpetual meaning is attached to happiness. I do not believe that actual happiness is a fleeting experience, but instead, a lasting state in which someone finds themselves. When looking to a dictionary or other source of reference to determine an official and concrete meaning behind happiness, the Miriam-Webster…

Throughout history humankind has been trying to define happiness. What is it exactly and how do we obtain it? We always think that happiness is a place to be or a destination and technically, that is the main premise or goal of our lives; to obtain happiness. So our whole lives go by from the minute were born to the last breath we take in a quest to work hard in order to reach that destination. Naturally, many philosophical writers have jumped on the bandwagon and put in their two cents of their views on the matter of happiness. Alexander Pope talks about the relationship and purpose man has to the universe in An Essay on Man, Voltaire wrote about living in blind optimism with a false notion of happiness in Candide, and Samuel Johnson wrote The History of Rasselas, Prince of Abyssinia, in which the main characters are on a quest to find happiness.…

According the Oxford Dictionary, the definition of Happiness is being pleased, being satisfied, and being lucky (Oxford Dictionary). However, the definition of being happy is different for everyone. There are many elements to one person’s happiness, whether that be fame or fortune, or something that most take advantage of such as a roof over their head, or dinner on the table every night. Happiness is an emotion that can be uncontrolled, and is forever changing. Expectations are a major reason why a person’s happiness is manipulated every second of everyday. The Existence of Happiness

Happiness, the intangible emotion that we all desire. Is there proof that this emotion even exists? Eduardo Porter has written an essay titled “What Happiness Is”. In this essay Mr. Porter took the time to study the emotion of happiness that we all experience in life. He makes an attempt to question not only his reasons as to why he is happy, but to have the reader question their own sense of happiness as well. What is it that makes us feel joyful emotions, and how can vastly different experiences cause us to feel the same emotion that we call happiness? While searching for the proof of this feeling Eduardo Porter reflects upon his own personal experiences, professional studies and ultimately decides that his questions may never be answered. Porter states that, “most psychologists and economists who study happiness agree that what they prefer to call “subjective well-being” comprises three parts: satisfaction, meant to capture how people judge their lives measured up against their aspirations; positive feelings like joy; and the absence of negative feelings like anger.” This is an important analysis of how we form the idea of how joyful we actually are. Something in life that one person might be ashamed of could improve the level of cheerfulness for another person. For example, the thought of getting a tattoo might cause one individual to feel guilt while another individual might feel pleasure at the same thought. Because there is no definitive formula that provides a calculated experience of happiness for everyone, it is interesting to question what actions or lack thereof in our lives cause us to be cheerful or to lose some of the happiness that we have already gained. The organization of this essay was well thought out and effective. The author opens with the statement, “Happiness is a slippery concept, a bundle of meaning with no precise, stable definition.” This opening statement provokes the reader to question their own beliefs in…
