Harker's Rational Reasoning
Poe establishes Harker’s need for rational reasoning by contrasting the sign of the strange driver with his personality. Throughout the first chapter Harker is depicted as a man who relies on facts and science. To gain knowledge he,“Search(ed) among the books and maps of the library regarding Transylvania”(1).
Harker relying on rational reasoning is evident when he sees the driver standing in front of the blue fire:
He describes the event as “a strange optical effect”(14).
“I took it that my eyes deceived me straining through the darkness”(14).
Harker does not accept things they are, but finds a reasonable reason to explain it.
