Harmful Effects of Television
It has been argued that the invention of the television has had many harmful

effects on our society. There are a wide range of complaints, including, but not limited

to, the corruption of youth because of explicit broadcasts, Obesity due to viewers rarely

leaving the couch, to the use of the television as practically a “baby sitter”.

While these may be valid arguments, I believe the fact of the matter is that it all

comes down to the parents, or parent. The parent(s) have control over what their children

can, or can’t watch. They may even choose to not have a television in their household at

all.

Being that I do not buy into the whole media frenzy that is the harmful effects of

television, I believe that television is very powerful medium of communication and

education. Although, thinking about it, the media can be a very powerful tool that if used

incorrectly, can have very harmful effects.

Television is one of the most useful forms of communication. Local,

international, and world news is readily available to people. We are always kept

informed of the weather, natural disasters, traffic, etc. This makes are daily lives a little

more easier. And in the case of natural disasters, televised fundraisers are aired to bring

relief to those affected.

In terms of education, television is very informative. Particularly in children’s

programming. Most popular of educational children’s programming is “Sesame Street”.

Since its debut in 1969, it has helped teach children the basics of counting, reading, etc.

There are entire channels devoted to educating people. Chief among these are The

Discovery Channel and The History Channel. Public programming especially places an

emphasis on education.

I believe that television programs that are created specifically for entertainment

are also beneficial. Violence on television has always been a target of the media but the

However, the television caused as well some negative impact on human life. Since watching a TV is so attractive, people read less books or even do not read them at all, spend less time on fresh air, and communicate with other people in person rarely. But neither television can fully substitute normal bidirectional communication nor it can replace book reading, and for sure it cannot anyhow replace spending time outdoors. So, the television may negatively influence mental, social, and physical health of a nation.…

Additionally, the United States government wanted to implement educational programming during this time to further enhance America’s knowledge of what was going on. Prior to this, there had already been processes to enforce educational programming over the air. The Office of Education produced twelve noncommercial network programs with the goal of putting “educational programs on network radio and to promote education by radio on local stations and in schools” (Horten, 2002, p. 19). Educational programming progressively became more and more apart of radio…

Kids who watch TV are more likely to smoke, to be overweight, to suffer from sleep difficulties, and have other health risk. And are less likely to be successful. No child under age two should watch television at all, the Academy of American Pediatrics advised in 1998.The main assumptions underlying the author’s thinking are: Most parents tend to use TV as a babysitter and do not monitor or care what their kids watch regardless of the future consequences.…

Television is just another part of technology keeping us from viewing the world and living our lives as we should. Instead of coming out of our house and taking on any challenge the world might have for us, we easily give up to our laziness, which quickly makes us grab the bag of chips, the soda, and sit down. Even though I am one of the many people who just loves to have the remote by their side, I strongly believe that television is nothing but detrimental to our society.…

In the United States, most television viewing is done alone. People devote more time to watching television than they do talking with their spouse or playing with their children and one third to one half of viewing is done in isolation. American teenagers watch less than 5% in the company of their parents (McDonald 71).…

Violence in the media is repeatedly blamed for violence in children, while it needs to be realized that there are so many other factors that feed into the behavioral development of a child. “Media violence is a risk factor that, working in concert with others, can exacerbate bad behavior.” (Cutler). The effects of violent media have been seen in children; however other risk factors contribute to trigger the response. There is no way of noting that violent media alone causes bad behavior. “One of the reasons so many media violence studies have been done is that the phenomenon may be too complex to study conclusively” (Cutler). The complexity of the accusation against the media is preventing any solid conclusion, and many of those studies have gone on to note that violent media affects children who have already been exposed to other various risk factors. To say violent media itself is corrupting youngsters is unfair to say the least. If the main focus is to ensure the safety of children, a second look needs to be taken into how the media in itself affects children.…

    Why Watching Tv Is Bad

Here is a question that comes to mind, but is it ever really thought about? Does television make people smarter? According to Steven Johnson’s “watching TV makes you smarter” he states, “The relationship between the explicit violence and the post 9/11 terrorist attack anxiety is not the only element of 24 that would have been unthinkable on prime time network twenty years ago”(278). Personally I don’t believe that television makes you gain knowledge. I have never heard of anyone stating that until now. All my life I have heard that knowledge is earned not learned, meaning that you can’t just gain knowledge by pressing a button but rather picking up a book or newspaper. Yes, there are educational programs on PBS and National Geographic, but it is overshadowed by the shows that show us a false reality. Dana Stevens supports my argument with a statement from her article “Thinking Outside of the Idiot Box” saying “as far as I can tell his thesis is that television shows have slowly grown more and more complicated over the last two decades, so that now, like rats in a behaviorist maze, trained viewers can differentiate among up to twelve distinct plot lines in shows like The Sopranos (295).…

Information is available almost immediately now. Years ago, before the internet was the huge presence it is today, news was much slower to reach American citizens. By the time they learned of world events, the events were in the past. Now, we know about things as they happen, and can even watch video of major world events, in real time. Americans have come to depend on this immediate availability of information. As a whole, we spend a great deal of time watching news reports, videos, and reading news articles. I feel this immediate availability makes us more socially and globally conscious.…
