There are many different forms of social media, but I will give a few examples. Magazines, such as People and Time, provide us with social news and relevant issues for society as a whole. ‘Chat’ - which can be video, audio, or textual – is a popular form of social contact. Positive feedback entices other consumers to try a new product, and negative feedback may stop some consumers from making a purchase they might otherwise have made. I bought a kitchen item based on positive reviews by other consumers, and I have not been disappointed. I did not buy a tool because other consumers said that it was not a quality product. As you can see, the commerce of these businesses was affected because of feedback left on social media sites.
5. How has the Internet changed the way many Americans consume information? Explain the importance and value of the availability of information on the Internet.
Information is available almost immediately now. Years ago, before the internet was the huge presence it is today, news was much slower to reach American citizens. By the time they learned of world events, the events were in the past. Now, we know about things as they happen, and can even watch video of major world events, in real time. Americans have come to depend on this immediate availability of information. As a whole, we spend a great deal of time watching news reports, videos, and reading news articles. I feel this immediate availability makes us more socially and globally conscious.
