There are many sites that we now use as ways of talking to others. Chat, IM (instant messaging) and email are one way that we can talk to friends and family that live great distances from where you live. Blogging sites such as Wordpress and Blogger are good for being able to write down your ideas and thoughts. Social networking sites such as Facebook and Myspace are a great way to communicate with friends and family which also live great distances. Micro blogging sites such as twitter are great because you are able to tell people what you are doing in brief messages. friends and family. Forums are great to be able to ask a large amount of people a questions and get a variety of answers. Now we also have internet video calls where we can see people face to face without having to travel the distance to see them.
2. What are the greatest benefits of social media for individuals and society?
The great benefits of social media for individuals are that we get to interact with more individuals that normally we would not see. Take for instance if one of our family members is overseas and we cannot call them because of the high phone call rates. Using social media, we are able to keep in constant contact with them and find out what is going on.
With using social media in society, we are able to keep up with the vast news that is ever-changing, find the best deals anywhere for the things that we want, be able to search for more information, share our opinions on things that normally we weren’t able to due to the lack of ways to get information to others.
3. What are the greatest problems of social media for individuals and society? One of the biggest problems that social media has is that we are not able to be face to face with the person that we are talking to. This lack of interaction with other individuals can have a negative effect on the way that society interacts with one another. Sometimes, we can actually get the wrong information if we look at the wrong site or talk to a person that is not credible. If we open an email that is suspicious or download a program that we think is from a trusted site, it can contain a virus that can steal our identity and all of our personal information. This makes it easy for identity thieves to ruin us financially.
4. How have modern social media sites affected commerce? Include positive and negative examples in your answer. Social media sites can increase commerce by reaching more of the consumers and letting them know of the deals that the companies are having. It also allows people to purchase items from the convenience of their own home and have it shipped directly to either their house or a store near them. A negative aspect of this is that the jobs of the sales persons that you would normally interact with at the store are not needed and then they could lose their jobs resulting in loss of income for them. You do get to see reviews on items, but sometimes the negative feedback can have an impact on something that you may buy if you just went to the store.
5. How has the Internet changed the way many Americans consume information? Explain the importance and value of the availability of information on the Internet. Americans are able to stay on top of the ever-changing information that the world has to offer. News can change in an instant, like Amber Alerts and weather. This can be very vital in an emergency situation. Students are able to search for information on sites and find updates on something that they are researching at the click of a button. This makes finding something that they are looking for when they need to get a paper or assignment done. Americans are also able to stay on top of what is changing in the world in the way of technology and are able to buy things from across the world.
6. How might you determine if information found online is trustworthy? Describe credibility issues with information found on the Internet. One way to determine if the site is credible is for it to have the “padlock” on the right hand side of the address bar. You can also trust government sites normally. Usually, they gave “.gov” and educational sites end with “.edu”. There are many sites that claim to be credible (such as Wikipedia) but often the information can be changed there to benefit the reader. Most sites that are on the internet can be labeled as one-sided opinions. A person can actually check to see if the site is credible by looking at the author and where they got the information from by checking the credited sites/information and by comparing the information to other sites
7. In what ways have politicians used the Internet in campaigning and in staying in touch with constituents? What is the overall effect of the Internet on politics? Politicians use the internet to see what Americans concerns are. They are able to reach more of the population and respond to questions faster. They are also able to respond to negative and positive comments about their campaign quickly. The effect of the mass use of the internet on politics has negative and positive results. The politician can reach more people that do not watch television and receive information about what people are saying about them and be able to make a response. I think that the internet has had a great impact on politics because it lets everyone see what the topic at hand is and respond to everything quickly. The negative thing is that everything is published; good or bad. This has a way of affecting the voters’ decision to choose the politician.
